The newsletter discusses feeding myths, toilet training tips, and upcoming parenting programs. It debunks the myth that eating is instinctive after the first month, and explains that eating becomes a learned behavior after 6 months. Toilet training tips include data tracking wetness times for two weeks, taking the child to the bathroom at those times, and using a visual schedule. Upcoming programs include Triple P parenting sessions, nutrition classes, library tours, and positive parenting seminars.

Feeding Myths

Occupational Therapy

Myth #2:
Eating is Instinctive. False

Toilet Training Your Wee Ones!

Eating is only an instinct for the first month of
life. From birth to 3-4 months of age, we have
a set of primitive motor reflexes (e.g. rooting,
sucking, swallowing)
which help us eat
while we lay down
pathways in the brain
for voluntary motor
control over eating.
Between the end of the 5th or 6th months of
life, these primitive motor reflexes drop out.
Eating is essentially a learned motor behavior
after 6 months of age.

Before you start the toilet training process, we

suggest you data track for two weeks by writing
down when your child is wetting him/herself
throughout the day. Start taking your child to the
bathroom at the times it tends to happen, and
every 15-20 minutes after they eat or drink anything. Making a visual schedule for your bathroom will help your child follow along while they
are learning the steps of toileting!

Positive Parenting Program

Give your child lots of
physical affection.
Children often like
hugs, cuddles, and
holding hands.

Psychology
Consistency is Important:
When routine goes by the
wayside children may get
confused and act out. In
order to encourage positive behaviors be consistentnot just with discipline, but with mealtime and bedtime routines.
Consistency provides stability and assists children in feeling safe and promotes a good environment for learning.

Play

Read the book Hokey Pokey, talking about

right/left and various body
parts. Then listen to the song,
and do the dance, emphasizing
the concepts of right and left as
well as body parts. You can then
have your child label in picture
books where the characters
body parts are (e.g., Point to Cliffords head.)
You could also ask where the character is
standing, for example, Is Clifford on the right
side of the tree or the left?

Language
While your child is getting dressed and ready to
go to school, ask your child what he/she would
like to put on first, second, etc. This models sequencing, which helps to build your childs story
telling skills. This activity is fun and easy because
your child is correct in almost any sequence (it is
easy to get dressed any number of ways), and
they have a visual of all their options. To make
the choice and step easier for your child you
could ask, "What do you put on first, socks or
shoes?" showing them both items.
