Mrs. Donohue's first grade class at St. Thomas school has been very busy in January. They have been preparing for Catholic Schools Week activities next week, including a non-uniform day and parent presentation. The teacher has seen academic growth in her students and plans a Valentine's Day party. She reminds parents to dress children appropriately for outdoor recess.

A Dynamic Catholic Education Centered in Christ

Mrs. Donohues Class

January 23, 2015

January is a very busy month here at St. Thomas. We have Catholic

Schools Week next week. Please read further on in the newsletter for information on Catholic
Schools Week.

I have done some more assessing with the students. Wow! There has been a lot of growth. The
children are amazed too when I show them the difference from the first marking period. Its so exciting to see.
You should be able to see your childs report card online. Please keep in mind that expectations are changing as the year progresses.
I am going to have a small Valentines Day party on Friday, Feb. 13th. If you would like to
send in a small treat for the whole class that day it would be fine. We will make Valentine bags at
school. I am asking that each child bring a Valentine for each of the students in our class. A class list
is attached to this newsletter.
Please remember to have your child dress for outdoor play (snowpants, boots, mittens, warm
coat, hat, scarf). They do go outside if the temperature is 0 or above.
Thank you again for all your encouragement and support! You are the best!
God bless,
Kelly

Catholic Schools Week

DIBELS SCORES
The week of Jan.26th is Catholic
Schools Week. Monday is also a
non-uniform day. Also on Monday is the Parent Virtues Presentation given by Liz Peters at
2:30 in the church. This should
be very interesting for you.
Wednesday afternoon we go to
the gym for the Living Rosary.

I will be sending home, in the next week or so, a

sheet with your childs DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of
Basic Early Literacy Skills) scores for the winter.
This time we assessed Oral Reading Fluency and Nonsense Word Fluency. The sheet will explain both of
these assessments. The benchmark is in parenthesis.
The score for Fall are also on that sheet. We will be doing the DIBELS one more time in the Spring.

How are the flashcards going? They tell me they are working

Monday, February 2nd I will put in their green
folders their one minute test. Your child
should practice saying the top half out loud

them a practice minute test on the top half

sheet should go back into their green folder
so they can use the bottom half the next
day for their test. Each childs goal is different, depending on how fast they write. The
goal is found at the bottom of the test paper.

We have learned about the digraphs: sh, th,

he sticks out his tongue at everyone; Shane (sh) tells
everyone to be quiet; Charlie (ch) thinks he is a train
and goes, ch, ch, ch,; Whipple (wh) tries to whistle
but he cant. We also learned that th has two sounds,
