The document contains three short poems for children. The first poem "Good Night and Good Morning" is about a little girl saying goodnight to the animals and nature around her as she goes to sleep. The second poem "The Little Red Hen" tells the story of a little red hen planting wheat and doing all the work to make bread while the other animals refuse to help. The third poem "My Bed is a Boat" is about a child imagining their bed as a boat that sails away on an adventure as they fall asleep at night.

Classical Poems for Children

Good Night and Good Morning

~Richard Monckton Milnes, Lord Houghton
A fair little girl sat under a tree,
Sewing as long as her eyes could see;
Then smoothed her work, and folded it right,
And said, "Dear work, good night! good night!"
Such a number of rooks came over her head,
Crying, "Caw! Caw!" on their way to bed;
She said, as she watched their curious flight,
"Little black things, good night! good night!"
The horses neighed, and the oxen lowed,
The sheep's "Bleat! bleat!" came over the road;
All seeming to say, with a quiet delight,
"Good little girl, good night! good night!"
She did not say to the sun, "Good night!"
Though she saw him there like a ball of light,
For she knew he had God's time to keep
All over the world, and never could sleep.
The tall pink foxglove bowed his head,
The violets curtsied and went to bed;
And good little Lucy tied up her hair,
And said on her knees her favourite prayer.
And while on her pillow she softly lay,
She knew nothing more till again it was day;
And all things said to the beautiful sun,
"Good morning! good morning! Our work is begun.

The Little Red Hen

The little Red Hen was in the farmyard with her chickens, when
she found a grain of wheat.

"Who will plant this wheat?" she said.

"Not I," said theGoose.

"Not I," said the Duck.

"I will, then," said the little Red Hen, and she planted the grain of wheat.

When the wheat was ripe she said, "Who will take this wheat to the
mill?"

"Not I," said the Goose.

"Not I," said the Duck.

"I will, then," said the little Red Hen, and she took the wheat to the mill.

When she brought the flour home she said, "Who will make some bread with this
flour?"

"Not I," said the Goose.

"Not I," said the Duck.

"I will, then," said the little Red Hen.

When the bread was baked, she said, "Who will eat this bread?"

"I will," said the Goose

"I will," said the Duck

"No, you won't," said the little Red Hen. "I shall eat it myself. Cluck! cluck!" And
she called her chickens to help her.

My Bed is

Boat
by
Robe
rt Louis
Stevenson

My bed is like a little boat;

Nurse helps me in when I embark;
She girds me in my sailor's coat
And starts me in the dark.

At night I go on board and say

Good-night to all my friends on shore;
I shut my eyes and sail away
And see and hear no more.

And sometimes things to bed I take,

As prudent sailors have to do;
Perhaps a slice of wedding-cake,
Perhaps a toy or two.

All night across the dark we steer;

But when the day returns at last,
Safe in my room beside the pier,
I find my vessel fast.
