Stepper Motor (Assigment2)

A stepper motor is a type of DC motor that rotates in discrete steps rather than continuously. It has a rotor made of permanent magnets and a stator with electromagnets that control the rotor's movement. When power is supplied to the electromagnets, they create a revolving magnetic field that causes the rotor to move in steps and provide precise position control without sensors. Stepper motors are commonly used in computer peripherals like printers and scanners due to their ability to precisely control positioning with digital signals.

STEPPER MOTOR

Working Principle;
A stepper motor is a type of DC motor which has a full rotation divided in an
equal number of steps. It is a type of actuator highly compatible with numerical
control means, as it is essentially an electromechanical converter of digital impulses
into proportional movement of its shaft, providing precise speed, position and
direction control in an open-loop fashion, without requiring encoders, end-of-line
switches or other types of sensors as conventional electric motors require
The principle of Working of stepper motor is Electro-Magnetism. It constructs
of a rotor that is of permanent magnet and a stator that is of electromagnets. The
following figure shows the construction of a practical stepper motor:

Now when we gives supply to stator's winding. There will be a magnetic field
developed in the stator. Now rotor of motor that is made up of permanent magnet,
will try to move with the revolving magnetic field of stator. This is the basic principle
of working of stepper motor. Now we are going to discuss its types. In this note you
will find the real method of working of specific type of servo motor

Construction:

Applications:

Computer controlled stepper motors are a type of motion-control positioning

system. They are typically digitally controlled as part of an open loop system for use
in holding or positioning applications.
In the field of lasers and optics they are frequently used in precision
positioning equipment such as linear actuators, linear stages, rotation
stages, goniometers, and mirror mounts. Other uses are in packaging machinery,
and positioning of valve pilot stages for fluid control systems.
Commercially, stepper motors are used:
1.

floppy disk drives

2. flatbed scanners
3. computer printers
4. plotters
5. slot machines

6. image scanners
7. compact disc drives
8. intelligent lighting camera lenses.

Driver:

Stepper motor driver portfolio includes a wide

selection of ICs operating at supply voltages less
than 20 V. The low voltage, low saturation voltage type bi-directional motor driver ICs
are optimal for use as 2-phase stepping motor drivers in printers, cameras and other
portable equipment.
