Grade 6 - Unit 1 Electricity Project: This Project Is Due Tuesday, November 18Th

This document provides instructions for a 6th grade electricity project that is due on November 18th. Students are asked to create both a series circuit and a parallel circuit using batteries, battery connectors, wires, light bulbs, and a switch. They must label each circuit correctly, integrate them into a real-life setting like car headlights, and be prepared to present and answer questions about their circuits. The project will be graded based on building proper circuits, ability to open and close them, use of required parts, neat construction, and the presentation.

Grade 6 - Unit 1 Electricity Project

THIS PROJECT IS DUE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18th.

SERIES AND PARALLEL CIRCUITS
You will create a series and parallel circuit using the following guidelines and
materials.

Background Information: In order for an electrical circuit to work, there has to be a

complete path from the power source (the battery) to the output device (the light
bulb) and back to the power source. This is done using conductors (wires). The
current flows from the battery through the wire to the light bulb. If the light bulb
doesnt light, then the circuit is open. If it does light up, then the circuit is closed.
Starting materials:
-

9V batteries
9V battery connectors
Insulated wires
An on/off switch
LED bulbs

Procedure:
1. Use the diagram given to construct a series circuit and a parallel circuit
(separate from one another).
2. You will need to be able to open and close your circuits easily. This can be done
by leaving one wire end unattached, or by using a toggle switch.
3. The circuits need to be labeled with series and parallel. Each circuit should
be able to be exposed and easily seen for grading.
4. You will present your circuits and answer questions about your project.
The building method and type of presentation you choose for your project should
be integrated it into a real life setting, such as car headlights, a lighthouse, a lamp
in a dollhouse window, etc.
Remember, you need to have two circuits - one series and one parallel.
