Sabrina Contreras researched landslides. A landslide occurs when part of a hillside becomes too weak to support its own weight, causing rock, debris, or earth to move down the slope. Common causes of landslides include earthquakes, heavy rain, snowmelt, and human activities like removing material from the base of slopes. Landslides can occur in all US states but are especially common in mountainous areas like the Appalachians and along the Pacific coast. They often have devastating impacts, such as the 830,000 deaths from a landslide triggered by an earthquake in Shaanxi Province, China in 1556.

1556 a strong earthquake struck Shaanxi Province,
China which caused a landslide. Most people in the city lived
on the side of the cliffs. Then the cliffs collapsed on all the
houses killing over 60% of the population. Around 830,000
people died from this landslide. It literally buried people
alive! Worldwide 30,000 have been killed from landslides
between 2004 through 2010. Usually during a landslide
people go missing but arent found dead yet!
Around 400 houses in a landslide located in San
Salvador, El Salvador. Imagine how much money that would
cost to rebuild! Dont even get me started with how much
money it cost to rebuild roads. Thats one way landslides
affect the economy.
After a landslide happened in El Salvador it took 3
hours for the government to send help which shows the lack
of help the government provides.
So mudslides are also landslides actually, its are
the worst kind of landslides. They usually kill many people.
The way mudslides are different is that is because they are
caused by rainfall which creates musd and then it turns into
a mudslide.
Things humans can do to prevent landslides are
not to add unnecessary weight to hills and not to take matter
away from the bottom of the hill.

Landslides happen with very little notice. So there

is nothing you can really do other than have some sort
of family plan to get out and RUN!
So these are the facts I have over landslide and
I hope you have learned something new!
