Introduction:
National Service Scheme (NSS) The Union
Education Minister Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao, was
launched during the Mahatma Gandhi’s
Centenary Year 24th September, 1969 involving
40,000 student volunteers in 37 universities.
Today, it has more than 2.6 million student
volunteers spread over 198 universities. "As a
measure of Educational Reforms and as a mean
to improve the quality of educated man
power".
Objective:
ØDevelopment of personality of a student
through community service.
Ø
ØUnderstand the community in which they
work.
Ø
ØUnderstand themselves in relation to
their community.
ØIdentify the needs and problems of the
community and involve them in problem-
solving.
ØDevelop among themselves a sense of
social and civic responsibility.

Motto:

The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You", reflects the


essence of democratic living and upholds the need for


self-less service. NSS helps the students develop
appreciation to other person's point of view and also
show consideration to other living beings. The
philosophy of the NSS is well doctrined in this motto.
Symbol:
The symbol for the
NSS has been based on
the Giant Rath Wheel
of the world famous
Konark Sun Temple
(The Black Pagoda)
situated in Orissa,
India. The wheel
portrays the cycle of
creation, preservation
& release & signifies
Badge:
The NSS Symbol is embossed on the badge. The eight

bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The


Red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young
blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit.
The Navy Blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the
NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the
welfare of the mankind.
Dress Code:
For Boys- They should
dress in Black & White
(White Shirt, T-Shirt with
Black or Blue Trouser /
Jeans)

For Girls- They should


dress in Black & White
Salvar Kameez etc.
Classification of
Activities:
There are two

kinds of activities
namely-

Ø Regular NSS
Activities.

Ø Special Camping
Programme.
vRegular NSS Activities:
NSS volunteers generally work with villages,

slums and voluntary agencies to complete


120 hours of regular activities during an
academic year.

Ø Adoption of Area.
ØRural Projects.

ØSurvey of the Village /Area.


ØUrban Projects.
Ø

ØIdentification of
Problems.
ØCompletion of Project.

ØNational Programmes.
