Lesson Plan for Cain

Date: Thursday, November 20th 2014


Subject: Math
Lesson Goals:
I can use a number line to count back.
I can find the difference by counting back.
I can find differences by using double facts.
I can solve problems by writing subtraction sentences.
I can use different strategies to solve a subtraction problem.
Materials:
-13 Number cards
-26 Math Cards
-SMARTboard
-Class set of dry erase boards, markers and erasers
-Self check board
Academic Vocabulary:

Activities:
1.) Human Number Line: This activity is design to review how to correctly use a number line. It will
remind a student moving to the left on a number line is one way to show subtraction. The teacher will
randomly pass out thirteen (13) cards labeled 0-12. Students who receive a card will stand in order from
least to greatest in the front of the room. The teacher will give students a subtraction problem and students
who did not receive a card have the opportunity to participate by hopping to the left the appropriate
amount of spaces. As the student is hopping, the rest of the class should participate in counting and
practice saying the number out loud.
2.) Mix-Match-Pair: To review how using doubles can help us subtract, each student will be given one
card. The students will go around the room and mix his or her card with another student. When the time
is up, students will have to match their card with his or her pair. One card will have a subtraction problem,
such as 6 3. Another person will have the answer 3. Once they have found their pair, they stand in
the front of the room as a pair to be checked.
3.) SMARTBoard: Each student will receive a dry erase board, marker and eraser. Students will sit in
front of the SMARTBoard. Special learners will have a partner to assist them. As a class, we will go
through the SMARTBoard slide and practice subtraction problems. One student will get a turn at the
SMARTBoard at a time to practice subtraction word problems (not every student will get a turn at the
board), those who are not at the SMARTBoard will write their subtraction sentences on their dry erase
board.

-Using a variety of subtraction strategies
-Kinesthetic activities
-Partner work
Assessment (formal or informal):
-Informally assessing students as they are participating in each activity; watching for strengths and
weaknesses. Such as Can students use more than one math strategy to solve a subtraction problem?
Can students correctly write a subtraction sentence?
-Students will informally assess themselves at the end of the math lesson by using our self-check.
Students will self-assess themselves on how they think they will do on tomorrows Math test based on our
review.
