Lesson Plan Feb1

This lesson plan is for a 6th grade math class comparing rational numbers on February 2nd. The learning objectives are for students to compare and order rational numbers using symbols like < and >, determine the value of rational numbers on a number line, and place positive and negative numbers on a number line. Students will watch a video on comparing numbers, discuss examples using a Prezi presentation, do practice problems, and take an exit ticket assessment. Differentiation strategies include visual representations, technology examples, reading as a class, and challenging extension questions.

LearningObjective(s)

When are negative numbers used and why are they important?
How do I use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in realworld contexts?
How do I compare and order rational numbers?

CCGPSorGPS
Standard(s)

I will compare and order rational using the math symbols <, less than
or equal to, greater than or equal to >, and =
I will determine the value of rational numbers on the number line or
in real world context
I will place positive and negative rational numbers on the number
line

MCC6.NS.7a Understand ordering and absolute value of rational

numbers. Interpret statements of inequality as statements about the

relative position of two numbers on a number line diagram. For
example, interpret 3 > 7 as a statement that 3 is located to the right
of 7 on a number line oriented from left to right.
7bMCC6.NS.5 Understand that positive and negative numbers are
used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values
(e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level,
credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and
negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts,
explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
7bMCC6.NS.6aUnderstand a rational number as a point on the
number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar
from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane
with negative number coordinates. Recognize opposite signs of numbers
as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line;
recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number
itself, e.g., (3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
MCC6.NS.7b Write, interpret, and explain statements of
order for rational numbers in real- world contexts. For
example, write 3C > 7C to express the fact that 3C is
warmer than 7C.

10minutes
The last ten minutes of class will be utilized for an exit slip that consists
of 3 to 5 questions assessing if the student has mastered the objectives
as well as vocabulary that is necessary to be successful on the exit slip.

1. Differentiation has been implemented to assist other students

with different learning styles.
2. Accommodations will be made but learning goals and grade level
standards will remain the same.
3. Accommodations will be implemented within the activities.
4. Visual representations will be provided during the Prezi
presentation with class involvement in example for those with
visual impairments as well as already printed copies of notes.
5. Technology based examples of number comparison will be
projected onto the board.
6. Additional challenging questions are there for those that have
finished prior to their peers on the practicing portal.

Visual representations, technology based examples and explanation, as well

as virtual instruction may be helpful as some students have weak reading
skills. Therefore, this option is available for those students during the
practice portion of the lesson. Reading as a class will also be helpful for
those that have weak reading skills

as the exit slip will help with evaluation of understanding of the content
in an informal formative assessment manner.
2.The practice questions will allow for checks in understanding and
mastering of the material in the portal and kahoot.it quiz
Formal assessment:
1.The last ten minutes of class will be utilized for the exit slips that will
demonstrate deep conceptual understanding. The students will
demonstrate what they learned, what misconceptions that they have,
and what they have learned during lesson through the exit slip it will be a
summative assessment of the lesson.
All standards listed in this lesson plan will be assessed through the exit
ticket question that will check for completion and understanding upon
exiting the classroom.
