The document provides average weight data for 10 dog breeds, with weights listed separately for females and males. For most breeds, the average male weight is higher than the average female weight. However, for two breeds - Pug and Coton De Tulear - the average female weight is slightly higher. The data aims to show that while males usually weigh more, there are some exceptions where females are heavier on average.

WHAT THIS DATA MEANS

The story we are trying to tell is that male dogs usually weigh more than females. It may not be a huge difference
for some. But, for others, it may be big. Also we want to say that females are not always lighter. In two of the dog
breeds, Pug and Coton De Tulear, the females average weight is heavier. We are seeing out of 10 breeds, how
many of them do the males weigh more?

PART A : CHART AND WRITING

What does the distribution tell you about the weights of the dogs?
The distribution tells me that male dogs usually weigh more than females as stated above under What this
Data means. The distribution made between the weights of the male and females is actually pretty distinct and
easy to tell what is what, who is who, and who weighs more or less. Some breeds, their weights are only a couple
pounds away. Others there is a noticeable difference.

PART C: WRITING
COMPARING LINE PLOT AND HISTOGRAM
The line plot and histogram both show similar data. Both charts display the weights of female and
male dogs. However, the line plot doesnt show female and male dogs. It is more anonymous of which
gender the dog is. The histogram shows which breed falls into which weight category.
STATE 2-3 ADVANTAGES FOR DISPLAYING DATA IN BOTH CHARTS
if comparing two different types or categories, easy to see
show trends easily
easy to read
STATE 2-3 DISADVANTAGES FOR DISPLAYING DATA IN BOTH CHARTS
:
Hard to decide on good intervals
gets difficult to put wide range of responses on a small chart
outliers are difficult to include in charts

Which of these two data displays is better suited for this type of data? Justify your answer.
The histogram. We think the histogram because it is much more clear, and when you look at it, it is a
little more easier to comprehend than the line plot. The are also not many visuals for the line plot. That is
mainly the big reason we chose histogram. Most people in the world are visual learners, so that really
helped. Both charts dont show exact weights, but they show which categories the dogs fall into. We think
that the histogram is better because you can see which gender is in what category, and how they
compare.
PART D : WRITING

Are there any outliers in your data? Explain your answer.

There are outliers in our data. Our data, first of all, shows the weights of 10 different breeds, male
and female. The breeds size varies from small, to large. There are 2 outliers. The first one is the Bernese
Mountain Dog.Its average male and female are the outliers. This breed is one of the largest and heaviest
dogs. The male weighs 101.5 pounds, and the female weigh around 96 pounds. This is only the average.
There are other bernese mountain dogs that weigh more than this.
PART E : CHARTS AND WRITING

Describe how you would use the box-and-whisker plot to find the answer to this question:
The ideal
weight of half the dogs is at least how many pounds?
The ideal weight or average of half of 10 different types of dogs we chose is about 30 for
females and about 46 for male dogs. I would use the box and whisker plots to find the ideal weight is
just look at the line in the box. That is because that is the median. The median is kind of like the
average. However, this isnt the best chart for this data. (read below)

Is using a box-and-whisker plot to find the ideal weight of half the dogs a reasonable way to go
about finding that data? Explain why or why not.
This box and whisker plot isnt a reasonable way to format this data. This chart says that the
middle or average weight is around 30 for females and 46 for males. This is chart doesnt say how
many breeds are included. There could be 50 or there could only be 3. If it was a Great Dane vs a
teacup breed, and the average was 50 pounds, that would be reasonable.

PART F : WRITING
Explain why you would
not
use a line graph to display the data.
The reason we would not use a line graph to display our data is because line graphs are usually for
showing data over time. Our data is dog weights. We could take one breed and see how they grow over
time, but with 10 different breeds that wouldnt work.

Describe data related to a dog that could be displayed on a line graph.

Line graphs could still be used for similar data. We would take one breed, then see how their weight
grows over the course of its lifetime. That data would be placed on a line graph. Our data about dog
weights, with 10 different breeds wouldnt work well.
