(Established Under Section 3 of The UGC Act 1956) : Reg. No (12PBECE601)

This document contains a continuous internal assessment test for a 6th semester civil engineering course on design of steel structures. The test has two parts. Part A contains 12 short answer questions worth 2 marks each on topics like tension members, compression members, slenderness ratios, and selection of members. Part B contains 3 longer answer questions worth 14 marks each involving design calculations for tension strength of plates and angles, and design of laced and battened columns. The test is worth a total of 60 marks and aims to assess students' understanding of key concepts and ability to apply the design of steel structures.

Session:
PART A (9x2=18marks)
Answer any nine questions
1. Tie member Explain.
2. What do you mean by compression members?
3. How the tension members are classified?
4. Name the modes of failures in a column.
5. What is meant by single section member?
6. Define slenderness ratio
7. Under what circumstances you would go for Built-up
members?
8. Classify the columns according to the slenderness ratios.
9. How the tension members are selected?
10. Distinguish column and strut
11. What is meant by stanchions?
12. What is the permissible stress in axial tension?
PART-B (3x 14 =42)
13. a) Determine the design tensile strength of plate

b). Determine the design axial load capacity of column
ISHB300@577N/m. if the length of column is 3m and it both the
ends are pinned.
14. a) A single unequal angle ISA90x60x6 is connected to a
10mm gusset plate and connected by 5 nos of 16mm bolts to
transfer tension. Determine the tensile strength of angle
i. if the gusset is connected to 90mm leg
ii. if the gusset is connected to 60mm leg
(OR)
b) In a truss a strut 3m long consists of two angles
ISA100x100x6. Find the factored strength of the member if the
angles are connected on both sides of 12mm gusset by
i.One bolt, ii.Two bolts, iii.Welding .
15.a). Design a laced column with two channels back to back of
length 10m to carry an axial factored load of 140kN. The column
may be assumed to have restrained in position but not in direction
at both ends. (Hinged ends)
(OR)
b) Design a battened column with two channels back to back
of length 10m to carry an axial factored load of 140kN. The
column may be assumed to have restrained in position but not in
direction at both ends. (Hinged ends)
