Problem:
How can you determine how fast an object is moving?
Hypothesis:
We can predict that you can determine how fast an object is moving by
measuring the amount of which the object travels (cm) per second.
Materials:
Meter stick
Timer
Car
Procedure:
First, we put the meter stick flat and straight on the table
Second, we got a timer on the computer
Third, we set the cars speed on low and set it and the end of the meter stick
Fourth, we let go and start the timer
Fifth, we stopped the timer when the car got to the end of the meter stick.
Sixth, we wrote down the data for distance traveled and time
Seventh, we repeated this process again, and then 2 times when the speed
was high
Data:
2.83 seconds first try on low
3.1 seconds on second try on low
1.6 seconds on first try on high
1.63 seconds on second try on high
35.3 centimeters per second on first try on low
32.3 centimeters per second on second try on low
62.5 centimeters per second on first try on high
61.3 centimeters per second on second try on high
Results:
We did four trials (2 on high and 2 on low) and found that on low, the car went
an average of 33.8 centimeters per second. On high, the car went an average
of 61.9 centimeters per second. Combined, the car went an average of 47.85
centimeters per second.
Conclusion:
In this lab we measured how fast an object can move by measuring how far it
went in a specific amount of time. Our group hypothesized that we could
predict the speed of what an object is traveling by measuring the amount of
distance the object travels (cm) per second. Our lab underwent four trials,
each of these trials that we measured at different speeds. Two of the trials
were measured on the speed of high while the other two were measured on the
speed of low. When measuring at the speed of low the car went on an average
of 33.8 centimeters per second, however when recorded on the speed of high
the object traveled on an average 61.9 centimeters per second. After
measuring and examining the two data sets, the object traveled at an average
speed of 47.85 centimeters per second. With this data we found that the object
which we observed moved at a speed of 4812.8 mph. After analyzing and
comparing the data, our hypothesis was correct. Being able to convert the
units of measurement helped our group a lot, even though the units of
measurement arent totally accurate.
