Multiplying Rationals Lesson
Multiplying Rationals Lesson
Assessment: (Go back to your learning objectives. What will the students do to
demonstrate they have met the learning objectives? Make sure each objective is
paired to an assessment measure)
The teacher can assess students learning on multiplying rationals by watching the group
presentations. If many students struggle with a certain step it can be noted, and the
teacher can go over that more in detail again.
At the end of the lesson students will complete an Exit ticket so we can see what their
thoughts on the lesson were.
Length of Lesson:
50 Minutes
Schedule of Activities: (Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers
will be doing during each part of the activity.)
Launch/Before: (10 minutes)
Students will receive Rationals Worksheet and work as a class to review adding and
subtracting rationals and then learn how to multiply rationals. We will have this document
saved as PDFs on our iPads and work them out on the board via Notability or other
application.
Investigate/During: (30 minutes)
We will break students up into groups (we will have students count off by 4s, 5s, or 6s, to
get their group depending on how many are in the class, so we will have 4-5 teams) and
give each group a problem to solve from the Group Worksheet. They will have to work
as a group to solve it and come up with a plan on how to teach the rest of the class their
problem.
They will have 10 ten minutes to solve the problem and prepare how to present it. They
will then have 2-3 minutes to present their problem to the class. We can have a short
discussion after each presentation if needed.
If they finish early they will work on more problems on the worksheet.
After each presentation we will briefly discuss whether we agree or disagree with the
group or whether there is another way to solve it.
After we are finished students will complete this exit ticket. (5 minutes)
Exit ticket They can access this on their worksheet.
If time permits students can continue to practice multiplying rationals finish the rest of the
Group Worksheet.
Adaptations: (How might the lesson be geared up or down? How might the lesson
need to be adapted for students with special needs?)
Differentiated Instruction: Students will be able to follow along with examples during
the first part of the lesson. Next they will be in groups where they can work with their
peers if they need assistance. Since it is group work the teacher will be more available to
help each student if needed
Geared Up: Students will find the solution to their problem and teach the class. The
students will higher potential will help their group members understand the process.
These students should also be leading their group for the presentation.
Geared Down: Students that need help will be able to work with group members to get
assistance. We can also give groups that need more help the easier problems.
Materials Needed: (Go through each activity and identify what items and
technology are needed to complete this lesson.)
