Professors Get The Grade

Ratemyprofessors.com is a well-known site to most college students. This site allows
students to assist other students in what professor would best suit them. The rater uses a
1-5 scale to rate the professor on easiness, helpfulness, clarity, interest of the
rater and textbook use.
This site is definitely useful because you can get a general idea of how a class is as a
whole, said Shane Hubert, Nowata sophomore. I never enroll in a class before checking
out the professors ratings first.
Hubert tries to make it a habit to rate each professor he takes. He does this to avoid
extreme ratings when students post when they have an extremely great or an extremely
bad professor.
Accompanied by the ratings are little faces. A good professor receives a smiley face, a
poor quality professor gets a frowning face and if the professor is average they will
receive an expressionless face. Another image that could be by the professors name is a
chili pepper by their name, meaning they are hot.
I recommend students to use this site as a source as long as it is not used as your only
source the little faces are not always completely accurate, said Alixandra Wells,
Poteau senior.
RMP does have pros and cons to it. Wells, along with other students, have chosen a
teacher specifically because of the ratings on the site. She has experienced an easy class
that she did not learn in because the ratings showed it was a great class to take. In reality
great class to take translated to easy A.
Not only is it a site for students to check, but professors can also check it to look at how
their students evaluate them. If professors do not like the ratings they have, RMP has a
rebuttal feature. This feature allows professors to defend themselves.
In other circumstances, professors can see how much their students enjoyed the class.
Some quotes they can read include respected by all students, easy lecture to listen to and
clear expectations. Most of these positive quotes are shown on the review of the NSU
professor, Richard Zellner.
Its always nice to hear youre appreciated, but just like anything found on the Internet,
be careful and take it with a grain of salt, said Zellner.
