As a teacher, I believe that my students learning comes first. But in order to facilitate
this learning I need to create a safe, predictable learning environment. Before I began student
teaching, I did not realize the vital importance of a stable and secure learning environment.
While student teaching in a kindergarten class I noticed that the students find comfort from
classroom routines. One my first day, the teacher had altered the classroom seating arrangements
of about one third of the students. Several students whose seat the teacher had not changed were
lost when they entered the classroom because their classmates seats had changed but during
independent work these same students were able to complete their learning tasks on their own
with no assistance as they knew the routines. They are also not willing to listen to new ideas until
I address their concerns. I now believe that my students learn best with clear, established
routines that provide the students with guidance for their behavior and so remove the stress of
having to decide the correct response on their own. As I continue to grow as an educator, I will
grow in my ability to establish routines for my students that allow them to learn without
worrying about what to do in different situations. I also will also learn to foresee issues before
they arise and prevent them from becoming a distraction to the class.
I also believe that the learning activities in the classroom should be centered on the
students and show them respect. I understand that students may be curious about something that
does not relate to the subject, or they have a connection that they want to make that may distract
other students from the lesson, however it is important to respectfully keep students on track and
provide them with avenues to value these connections. While I student taught in a 4th grade
classroom, several students became excited during a lesson on Rosa Parks. They had heard
stories about her from their families as well as realizing how Rosa Parks has influenced society
today. While reading the book aloud to the students I had to listen to some of the students
connections after the lesson as they were not on topic. This allowed me to value these students
thoughts but also keep the lesson on track. As I grow as an educator, I need to develop an
awareness of how to direct classroom conversations to allow for students to express their interest
the connections they are making while also meeting the needs of the other students.
Faith Foundation
All of my beliefs in education stem from my faith. I believe that God created the universe
and everything in it and that my purpose is to bring Him glory. All my beliefs stem from this
understanding of the world. I believe that as I explore Gods creation that declares His glory
(Psalm 19:1-3) with my students and attempt to make sense of all that He has created, this brings
honor to God. While I cannot verbally express my beliefs in public schools, it does influence the
way I act and how I treat the students. I believe that God created each student unique and that He
values each of them and so I bring glory to God through treating my students with respect and
kindness in the classroom. I will always do my best as an educator because through this I not
only help my students learn and grow, but I also bring honor and glory to God.
Conclusion
My philosophy of education has changed not only during my experience as a student
teaching but also as a student at Regent University. As I continue to teach my philosophy will
continue to grow as I learn more about how students learn and I interact with the students in my
classroom and work to meet their individual needs. I will lead my students by example through
being willing to learn new things and seek out new information as I teach. As I trust in God to
give me the strength and wisdom to guide these students, they will teach me as well on how to
best meet their needs.
