ECE 330 homework assignment #2, due on Friday, March 7, 2014

Problem 1
A coil of 180 turns is wound uniformly over a wooden ring having a mean circumference of 700
mm, and a uniform cross sectional area of 400 mm2. If the current through the coil is 6 A, calculate:
a) the magnetic field strength
b) the flux density, and
c) the total flux
Problem 2
A mild steel ring having a cross sectional area of 600 mm2 and a mean circumference of 500 mm
has a coil of 220 turns wound uniformly around it. Calculate:
a) the reluctance of the ring
b) the self inductance of the coil, and
c) the current required to produce a flux of 900 Wb in the ring. (Given that r is about 420).
Problem 3
Fig. 3 shows an iron circuit with a small air gap. A 7000turn coil carries a current I = 25 mA which sets up a flux
within the iron and across the air gap. If the iron cross
section is 0.810-4 m2, the mean length of flux path in iron
is 0.16 m, r = 780, and air gap length is 0.8 mm. Calculate
the air gap flux density and the self inductance of the coil.
