The CAF Book

The CAF Notebook and Record Keeping Forms
The CAF notebook front cover should be designed so that it
is easy to recognize among a stack of notebooks.
The CAF notebook is organized into sections
a. Section 1a: Conferencing Calendar- This document is
used to schedule and keep track of conferencing
appointments with students
b. Section 1b: Keeping Grid Form- This document is used to
track the individual conferences by student to help the
teacher make sure that a conference is not missed. For
example, if a student is absent it is easy for the teacher
to see that a meeting needs to be rescheduled.
c. Section 1c: Strategy Group Forms- This document is
used to create flexible groups based on similar goals for
working on strategies to help students improve their
reading skills. The document includes the specific
strategy, students in the group, and the date. When a
student is ready to move on the students name is
crossed off of the list.
d. Section 2a: This section contains a divider tab marked
with each students name. Each students section
contains a CAF Menu document, a Reading Conference
Form, and a Writing Conference Form. Each form has a
place to identify strengths, goals, instructional
strategies, what the teacher has observed, and steps
that the student should take to meet the goals.
CAF Step by Step
Create a CAF bulletin board. The board should be arranged
at the students eye level so the students can reach and read
the board. The board should be divided into 4 sections with
each section titled with the CAF (Comprehension, Accuracy,
Fluency, and Expanded vocabulary) heading followed by a
short definition. The rest of the board should be left blank.
Students will fill out note cards that list the goal that they are
working on and add a sticky note on to which they have
written their name. The sticky note is added to the board so
the student can visually see his or her goal.
Day 1, 1st Read Aloud: Implement a read aloud and check to
understand strategy. Explain the purpose of the CAF menu.
After reading the storybook and reviewing the Check to
Understanding strategy, write Check for Understanding on a
note card and add it under the Comprehension column.
Introduce the Daily 5 routine (see notes from The Daily 5
book)

4. Day 1, 2nd Read Aloud: Implement a read aloud and the Cross
Checking strategy. After reading the storybook and reviewing
the Cross Checking strategy, write Cross Checking on a note
card and add it under the Accuracy column of the CAF Menu.
Check for Understanding should still be practiced.
5. Day 1, 3rd Read Aloud: Implement a read aloud and the next
Expand vocabulary strategy. Point to the Expand vocabulary
column on the menu and explain the purpose of the column.
After reading the storybook, write tune in to interesting
words and use new vocabulary in speaking and writing on a
note card and add it to the CAF menu under the Expand
vocabulary column. Continue to practice the Check for
Understanding and the Cross Checking strategies.
6. Day1, 4th Read Aloud: Implement a read aloud and a Fluency
strategy. Point to and explain the purpose of the Fluency
column on the CAF Menu. After reading write Reread Text on
the strategy card and add it to the CAF Menu under the
Fluency column. Continue to practice the Check for
Understanding, the Cross Check, and Expanding vocabulary
strategy when reading and discussing the book.
7. From Whole-Class Lessons to Individual Conferences:
Assessment to Instruction- i. Assess individual students using
a Developmental Reading Assessment, ii. Discuss the Results
with the Student, iii. Set Goals and Identify Strategies with the
Student (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand
Vocabulary), iv. Guide the Student to Place their Name on a
Post-it Note and add it to the Caf Menu by the category they
are working to improve, v. Teacher Fills Out the Individual
Reading Conference Form, vi. Teacher Fills Out Strategy
Groups Form, vii. Implement instruction
C. Conferring with Children
1. Record specific information related to the conference next to
the icons on the Reading Conference with Icons form. Pencil
Icon: Jot down the title of the students selection, Eye Icon:
record what you observe the student doing related to the
goal, Brain Icon: record what you think the focus of the next
conference should be, Target Icon: record the two things we
want the student to work on until the next conference, Next
Icon: reminds us to talk to the student about when we will
next meet to check on his or her progress and to schedule
when the appointment will take place.
2. Strive to develop a common language
3. Implement the 7 Elements of Successful Conferences: i. check
the Calendar for Appointments, ii. Prepare for the Conference
(scan notes, think about next steps), iii. Observe the child and
listen to the child read (is the student applying the strategy,

strengths, weaknesses), iv. Reinforce and Teach (model a

strategy and guide them to work on the strategy), v. Practice
the Strategy (watch the student practice the strategy to see if
clarifications need to be made), vi. Plan (determine the next
step for the student- same goal or set a new goal), vii.
