Animal Farm
Chapter 1 - Summary
Mr. Jones, the owner of Manor Farm, goes to bed without locking
the barn.
All the farm animals, except Moses, Mr. Jones’ raven, meet in the
barn to hear a speech by Old Major.
Major thinks he's dying, and he wants to share his wisdom with the
other animals.
He compares the animals’ lives to slavery and says that it’s all
because of the way the humans treat them.
Old Major shares a dream he had of a world in which animals are
free, happy, well fed, and treated with dignity.
He encourages the animals to join together as comrades (Friends)
against the humans and to start a rebellion.
Major tells the animals that anyone who walks on two legs is an
enemy and those with four legs or wings are friends.
He also tells them that they must never be like the humans, so
they should never live in a house, sleep in a bed, wear clothes,
drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, touch money, engage in trade
(business), or treat another animal in a negative way.
Old Major teaches the animals a song, Beasts of England.
They sing and make so much noise, they wake up Farmer Jones.
He assumes there is a fox in the barn and fires a shot into the side
of the barn.
The animals go to sleep.: Animal Farm
Chapter 2 Summary
Old Major dies.
The animals make plans to carry out his wishes and take control of
Manor Farm.
‘Two pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, take charge and teach and
organize the others.
Along with Squealer, another pig, they create a philosophy (set of
beliefs/rules) to live by called Animalism.
They share the rules/beliefs of Animalism with the other farm
animals who find them hard to understand.
Moses, the raven, tells tales of a place called Sugarcandy
Mountain, where animals go when they die. The pigs convince the
other animals this is not true.
Boxer and Clover, horses, help ready the other animals for the
revolution.
The rebellion/revolution happens quickly.
Farmer Jones forgets to feed the animals. When they break into
the shed to get food, Farmer Jones and his men whip the cows.
The animals attack the men and chase them off the farm.
The animals destroy many of the things in the barn, eat lots of
corn, and sing “Beasts of England”, their new anthem.
‘They go inside the farmhouse and are amazed at how Fancy it is.
The animals decide to make it a museum.
The pigs reveal to the others that they have taught themselves
how to read.‘Snowball changes the front gate sign from “Manor Farm” to “Animal
Farm”.
The pigs milk the cows.
Snowball tcads the other animals to the fields to start harvesting.
Napoleon follows later, and when the animals return, the milk is
gone.Animal Farm
Chapter 3 Summary
The animals spend the summer harvesting the fields.
It's the best harvest ever.
Boxer does most of the heavy labor and adopts “I will work
harder!” as his personal motto/slogan.
Every Sunday the animals have a flag (green background for the
fields of England and a white hoof and horn for the animals) raising
ceremony.
They also have a democratic meeting where they debate and set
new policies that are good for everyone.
‘Snowball and Napoleon have the loudest opinions, and they always
disagree.
Snowball starts committees with various goals. Most fail, but the
ones that help the animals learn to read and write are somewhat
successful. The pigs are the best readers and writers.
“Four legs good, two legs bad,” is the most critical maxim of
Animalism.
Napoleon takes no interest in Snowball’s committees.
He takes Jessie and Bluebell’s puppies to raise and train them.
The animals discover that the pigs are drinking all the milk and
eating all the apples.
‘Squealer says this is so they can think well; otherwise, Mr. Jones
might come back and take over the farm.
This frightens the animals and they agree to let the pigs have the
milk and apples for the collective good.Animal Farm
Summary - Chapter 4
News of the rebellion has spread.
‘Mr. Jones lives in town and continues to drink, complaining to his
neighbors, Mr. Frederick and Mr. Pilkington.
They start to spread rumors about Animal Farm to discourage their
own animals from getting any rebellious ideas.
However, the pigeons spread the true news of Animal Farm and the
song, Beasts of England, to the surrounding community.
In early October, Mr. Jones and some others attack Animal Farm.
Snowball has been expecting this, and he studies Julius Caesar's war
tactics (plans) to prepare their defense.
The humans are quickly defeated.
Snowball is shot and a sheep is Killed. Boxer may have Killed a stable
boy and feels very badly about it.
Mollie stays away from the battle.
Snowball and Boxer receive medals labeled “Animal Hero, First Class”
for their bravery.
The animals find Mr. Jones’ gun, which they put on display, and they
agree to fire it twice a year on holidays: October 12, the anniversary
of the Battle of the Cowshed (the name of this battle) and on
Midsummer's Day, the anniversary of the rebellion.Animal Farm
Summary - Chapter 5
Mollie does less and less and disappears to pull the carriage of a man
who gives her treats.
The animals continue having their meetings every Sunday, and Snowball
and Napoleon continue to disagree.
Snowball is a better speaker, but Napoleon is better at getting
supporters.
Snowball wants to improve the farm and build a windmill. Napoleon
disagrees and says they should just worry about what they need now.
Napoleon looks at Snowball’s plans and urinates on them.
When the plans are complete, the animals have a meeting. Snowball
makes a great speech. Napoleon makes a short, uninspired one.
As the animals prepare to vote, Napoleon makes a strange sound.
Suddenly, nine dogs, wearing brass-studded collars, come into the barn,
attack Snowball, and chase him away.
The return and surround Napoleon, who announces that from now on
the Sunday meetings will only be for show. From now on, all decisions
will be made by the pigs.
The animals are confused.
Squealer tells them that in doing this, Napoleon is making a big
sacrifice and as the smartest animal, it is best that he makes all the
decisions.
Squealer says that Snowball was a traitor and a criminals, and the
animals finally accept this.
Boxer adopts the maxims: “I will work harder,” and “Napoleon is
always right.”+ Three weeks later, Napoleon announces that they should build the
windmill he earlier was against. Squealer says that Napoleon never
really opposed it; he just pretended to so they could oust (get rid of)
Snowball. :
* After hearing Squealer’s convincing words, and with the dogs growling,
the other animals accept this.Animal Farm
Summary - Chapter 6
The animals work hard to farm the field and build the windmill.
Their food is rationed (amount cut), and they receive none at all unless
they work on Sunday as well.
Since they believe that they are working for their own good, not Mr.
‘Jones’, they take on extra work.
Boxer works the hardest, doing the work of three horses.
The most difficult task is to break the stone they need for the
windmill.
The need materials they can't grow or find on the farm like iron, nails
and oil.
Napoleon hires a human solicitor (lawyer), Mr. Whymper, to help them
trade.
The animals are shocked, but Squealer tells them that the
commandments do not forbid trade or the use of money.
Mr. Whymper comes to the farm every Monday, and Napoleon places
orders with him for supplies.
The pigs move into the house and begin sleeping in beds, a violation of
the Seven Commandments; however, this commandment now appears to
be changed: “No animal shall slelep in a bed with sheets.”
Squealer convinces the other animals that the pigs need a comfortable
place to sleep in order to think clearly and serve the farm.
A bad storm comes and topples (knocks over) the windmill. Napoleon
blames Snowball and convinces the animals to begin building it again.Animal Farm
Chapter 7 Summary
During the winter the animals struggle to rebuild the windmill.
They run out of food, but don't let the humans know.
The humans say that Snowball didn't destroy the windmill; rather, the
walls weren't thick enough.
The animals say this isn't true, but they make the walls thicker’
anyway.
Boxer inspires everyone to work harder.
To get money for food, Napoleon agrees to sell 400 eggs/week.
The animals are shocked, the hens rebel, and Napoleon cuts out all
their food.
Nine hens die before they give in to Napoleon.
Whenever anything goes wrong, Napoleon blames Snowball by claiming
he comes during the night and causes damage.
Napoleon and Squealer convince the animals that Snowball has been
partners with Mr. Jones from the beginning and that he wasn't a hero.
Napoleon calls all the animals together, asks some of them questions,
and has them purged (killed by the dogs).
The animals are frightened and confused.
Boxer says it must be their fault and decides to work even harder.
The animals start singing Beasts of England but are told it may no
longer be sung, It only applied to the rebellion+ Squealer gives them a replacement song about patriotism, but it does
not inspire them. 2Animal Farm
Chapter 8 Summary
The animals notice a commandment change from “No animal shall kill
any other animal," to "No animal shall kill any other animal without
cause."
The animals assume they misunderstood the original commandment.
They continue to work even harder to rebuild the windmill.
‘Squealer continues to work on convincing them that they are better
off than with Mr. Jones.
Napoleon has a new title, Leader, and he continues to bargain with Mr.
Frederick and Mr. Pilkington.
He sells Mr. Frederick some wood for cash.
The animals finish the windmill, but before they use it, Napoleon
discovers that Mr. Frederick gave him fake money.
Mr. Frederick attacks and blows up the windmill: the animals attack
the men, Several animals die and Boxer is seriously hurt.
The pigs discover some whiskey and their behavior changes.
Rumors spread that Napoleon is dying, but the next day he's fine.
The animals see Squealer with a paintbrush by the Seven
Commandments, but don't connect that with a change in yet another
one from “No animal shall drink alcohol,” to "No animal shall drink
alcohol to excess.”
They assume their memories are faulty.Animal Farm
Chapter 9 Summary
The animals start rebuilding the windmill again.
Boxer continues to work hard but doesn't look as healthy.
He decides he'll retire when it’s completed as he'll be twelve.
Food becomes scarcer and is reduced except for the pigs and dogs.
Squealer produces statistics that say they're better off than with Mr.
Jones.
Napoleon builds a school for the pigs and orders spontaneous (spur of
the moment) demonstrations (speeches and marches) praising Animal
Farm.
When the animals complain, the sheep drown them out.
In April, Animal Farm is declared a Republic and Napoleon, the only
candidate, becomes the president.
The leadership says that Snowball was partners with Jones from the
beginning, and the animals accept that.
Moses returns to live at the farm and still talks about Sugarcandy
Mountain (heaven).
Boxer collapses. The pigs say he is being brought to a hospital to get
better: however, he is actually being sent to.a glue maker to be killed.
‘Squealer says Boxer could not be cured and he has died at the
hospital and tells the animals he was at his side.Squealer says that Boxer praised Animal Farm and says that the
rumors that he went to a glue factory are false. The hospital just
borrowed the glue factory cart to transport him.
Again, the animals believe him.
‘The farmhouse receives a delivery of whiskey. No one knows how
money was found to pay for it.y
Animal Farm
Chapter 10 Summary
‘Many years pass and few animals actually remember the Rebellion.
The animals finish building a new windmill and use it for grinding corn.
‘The farm is richer, but only the pigs and dogs live comfortably.
‘Squealer continues to tell the other animals that the pigs and dogs do
important work, and the animals accept that.
The animals take pride in their farm and still believe in their original
goals - freedom from humans and equality for all.
‘Squealer teaches the sheep anew chant: Four legs good, two legs
better, and Squealer and Napoleon begin walking on two legs.
Clover asks Benjamin to read the writing on the barn wall. Only one
commandment remains, “all animals are equal", but now a phrase has
been added, but some animals are more equal than others".
Napoleon starts smoking a pipe and the pigs start reading human
magazines, listening to the radio, using a telephone and wearing human
clothes.
The pigs invite their human neighbors over to inspect Animal Farm.
‘The farmers praise the pigs and express their regret for past
misunderstandings.
The animals watch the pigs and humans toast one another and talk
‘about how each group has its lower class,
Napoleon tells the humans they have always wanted to deal with them
peacefully and that the farm will be renamed Manor Farm again.
They play cards together and someone cheats.+ The animals watching realize they can't tell the difference between
the pigs and the humans.
