The document summarizes a study investigating the relationship between high school students' grade point averages (GPA), class rank, and end of course test (EOC) scores. The study collected GPA, class rank, and EOC scores in algebra 1 and English 1 for 228 11th grade students. Scatter plots and correlation calculations were used to analyze the relationships. The results found moderate correlations and R-squared values below 50%, indicating GPA and class rank are not accurate predictors of EOC scores. The study concluded by rejecting the null hypotheses of no relationship and accepting the alternative hypotheses that relationships exist between GPA/EOC scores and class rank/EOC scores.

High School Students Making the

Grades
By: Breanna Cole

Research Question

Do Grade Point Average and Class Rank have a

Correlation with how high school students score on End
of Course Tests?

Similar Studies
Research conducted by Educational Testing Service
showed a strong positive relationship between high school
grades and SAT scores.

A study conducted by College Readiness looked at first

year college students GPA and compared this to their ACT
scores.

Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis: There is no relationship between GPA and EOC
grades.
Alternative Hypothesis: There is a relationship between GPA and
EOC grades.
Null Hypothesis: There is no relationship between Class Rank and
EOC grades.
Alternative Hypothesis: There is a relationship between Class Rank
and EOC grades.

Variables
Independent
Grade Point Average
Class Rank

Dependent
EOC Scores

Design and Methodology

Round 1:
Collect GPA, Class Rank, and EOC scores from 11th grade students from the previous
school year (2013-2014).
Graph GPA vs Alg 1 EOC, then GPA vs Eng 1 EOC.
Graph Class Rank vs Alg 1 EOC, then Class Rank vs Eng 1 EOC.
Calculate the R-sq value to solve for the variation between the two variables in each.
Calculate the correlation between each by solving for Regression Coefficients which will
give the p-value.
Determine if there is a correlation between Class Rank and EOC scores, and/or if there
is a correlation between GPA and EOC scores.

Round 2:

Sorted through data and looked at the grades of people who all failed an End of Course Test
Compared Grade Point Averages of these people who failed an EOC test of the same course
Graph the GPAs of the different groups
Analyze and determine if there is a correlation by solving for Regression Coefficients which will
give the p-value.

Data Collected

I collected each of the following pertaining to 228 different 11th grade

students:
GPA
Class Rank
Algebra 1 EOC score
English 1 EOC score

Analysis
Inspection of the graphs show an unequal variance through the scatterplots indicating
that the correlations are only moderate, as calculated by the Pearson Correlation
Values, being that they are fairly low.
The R-sq values for each of the four graphs were ranged between 40.6%-45.3% which
means that only 40.6%-45.3% of the variation of each graph can be explain by the
regression on GPA or Class Rank.
There is also clustering of 100s on the graphs which had an affect on the slope
(greater for GPA graphs, lower for Class Rank graphs).

Conclusion

Because the correlations werent significant and the R-sq values were all
below 50%, results were as follows:
GPA cannot be used as an accurate predictor of EOC scores.
Class Rank cannot be used as an accurate predictor of EOC scores.

After analyzing my research, I have come to reject my original null hypothesis

and accept the alternative for both the correlation between GPA and EOC
scores, as well as Class Rank and EOC scores.

Further Research

My further research would be to see if there is a correlation between the

grade in the course vs the score on the EOC test of the same course. The
grade in the class would serve as a predictor of the success of the student on
the EOC. This research would show if the grade in the class is an accurate
depiction of knowledge learned.
