SOCIAL STUDIES UNIT 6: THE WEST

Welcome Parents and Guardians,

Pack your bags! We are embarking on the
beginning of a brand new unit. Within this brand new
unit we will focus on the topic of The West. The main
ideas include the following: Many parts of the West are
mountainous, the climate in different areas of the West
varies greatly, the West is rich in resources, explorers
from Spain and settlers seeking gold helped shape the
West and cities in the West have many different kinds
of businesses and attractions.
Your student will be taking home a workbook
packet filled with readings and assignments to be
brought back the next day. This unit is going to be
presented in the form of a road trip. The students will
keep a Journal to record facts and important details
along the way. The final project will be a presentation
of their choice to show the class what their favorite
part of the road trip was. The students will collect a
range of information they can choose to use to support
this presentation. We begin our journey to the West
February 16th, 2015 at 1:40pm.

How You Can Help at Home:

and the states in which they are
found.
Help your students learn the
names and located of the 11
states in this region. If you have
ever visited one of these states,
share your experience with your
child.

Fast Facts:

is the worlds oldest national park. It boasts
spectacular hot
springs and
