This artifact is an email from a teacher to a student's mother about the student's behavior. The teacher communicated about an instance when the student, who has autism spectrum disorder, displayed inappropriate behavior. However, the teacher also noted that after the behavior occurred, she played with the student to build their relationship, demonstrating understanding and respect for the student as a diverse learner. The teacher reflected that forming a relationship with students who learn differently, like the student, can be rewarding. The student has made progress over the years in preschool, but still has occasional difficult days, and the teacher thinks it's important to have a positive interaction after any inappropriate behavior to show the student is respected and enjoys school.

I chose this artifact to show:
_____ growth in this standard __X__ strength and competency in this standard Evidence to support attainment of this standard: Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard: As an educator it is important to show understanding and respect for all learners. Leighton is one of my students who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her mother and I email frequently about how Leightons day went because she can display some inappropriate behaviors at home and at school. In this email I let Leightons mom know about some behavior that she had, and then also let her know that even after displaying negative behaviors I played with Leighton to build up a relationship with her because I understand and respect her as a diverse learner. Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better): Leighton has taught me a lot about students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and how fun and rewarding it can be to form a relationship with a student who learns in a different way. When Leighton started preschool as a 3 year-old she displayed a lot of inappropriate behavior, such a crying, dropping to the floor, and having fits. Now that she is in 4 year old preschool I have seen her make so much progress and grow so much. However, she still has a bad day every now and then and displays these inappropriate behaviors. After an episode of inappropriate behavior I think it is important to have a good interaction with Leighton so she enjoys school and we can form a good bond. I also want Leighton, her mom, and other students in our classroom to know that even after an episode of inappropriate behavior I dont hold that against Leighton and I want to treat her with respect.
