Choo-Choo Train: Lesson Plan #1

The document describes three lesson plans about trains that were taught to children in a classroom setting called Room to Grow. In the first lesson plan, the teacher read a book about trains and led an activity where the children followed her in a line around the classroom pretending to be a choo choo train. In the second lesson plan, the teacher read The Little Engine That Could and the children did an activity connecting dots to make a train. In the third lesson plan, the children constructed trains out of basic shapes to identify the shapes.

CHOO-CHOO TRAIN

For my HDFS 430 course in Room to Grow I had to create three lesson plans.
The theme for Room to Grow was Transportation. The children at Room to Grow have
been learning about different types of transportation, such as cars, airplanes, buses, etc.
Every Wednesday, throughout the weeks of March 26th and April 7th, I was able to teach
the class about new transportation and more specifically about trains! During those
weeks, the children were able to learn about trains, the different types of trains and were
able to make their own train. Read along below and enjoy the ride down the childrens
memory lane.

Lesson Plan #1
Standard 1.6.4: Share information about an item of interest
Standard 15.13 engage in a simple game with rules
On March 26th 2014, my first lesson plan took place in Room to Grow. I was able
to teach the children about trains, so I read them a book called Trains by Anne Rockwell.
The book Trains by Anne Rockwell was about the different types of trains. Some of the
kids were in to the book more than others. However, all of the kids really enjoyed the
activity. For the activity, I decided to do the choo choo train line around the classroom. As
I was the conductor, the children were able to follow me. The children did a great job and
they really followed the directions carefully. Few minutes later, I saw a couple of children
doing it by themselves and taking turns being the conductor. It was a great feeling
knowing that the children enjoyed the activity!

Lesson Plan #2
Standards 1.1.4: Draw connections between story events and personal experiences.
Standards 15 3.2 Use story to express ideas and feelings
Standard 21.1: Rote count to 24

On April 3rd, 2014 in Room to Grow, I

gathered the children in the center of the circle
and I read them a book called The Little
Engine that Could by Watty Piper. Before
reading the book, I asked the students if they
have ever ridden on a tricycle and if riding a
tricycle was or have they ever gave up on
riding a tricycle. The students were very
cooperative and interested in talking about a
tricycle. After, asking the students several
questions about tricycle, I read to them the
book, The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper and throughout the book I asked the
students several questions, such as Do you think this train will help the toys go over the
mountain? How did the little train break
down? How do you think the toys felt when
they couldnt go over the mountains? The
children were very attentive and into the book.
After reading the book, the children did an
activity where they were able to connect the dots
to make a train. The children really enjoyed the
lesson plan and the book. Remember class
whenever you think you cant solve something,
dont give up and always keep trying!

Lesson plan 3:
Standard 2.1.1: Determine the attributes of basic shapes

The third lesson plan also took place in Room to Grow and it consisted of constructing a
train out of different shapes. The kids were able to identify the shapes, while creating

their engine. Most of the children really enjoyed creating their engine and I was able to
see all of their creativity.
