Technology to Support Communication

Communication is a very important part of education, not only for the students but for the
parents and global community. In todays world it is normal for your children to have technology
in many things they do today. With technology progressing there are many different ways to stay
connected in all aspects. For the parents you could develop a class website, for global
community you could set up live chats, as well as emails for pen pals and emails for parents.
Having a classroom website could be a very positive thing because it would keep the parents
connected to their children during the day. Kathleen Eveleigh is a 1st grade teacher who decided
to have a classroom website where the parents could log on and see the days summary. They
were able to see what the lesson plans were and what they were doing in gym or art or music that
day. Before, a typical conversation between parent and student might have consisted of the
parent asking, What did you do in school today? and the child responding, Nothing or
Played. With the classroom website, a parent or caretaker can build on the information
conveyed in the daily summary and ask more specific questions such as, I read that Mrs.
Eveleigh is reading Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. What happened to Charlie today?
(Brown, S) Planning to teach the 3rd grade allows the parents to see what they are learning that

day as well as any homework or upcoming events that the children might forget to mention to
their parents.
Since technology is growing students are able to do many things they couldnt do before, like
have live chat session with students all over the world. Not only can the class chat with
classrooms from other parts of the world but they can also have views from museums or
landmarks that are too expensive for the school. Cindy Phthisic who is a 2nd grade teacher said,
On a recent trip to the Washington Monument, I held a Skype conversation with a group of
first-graders and showed them a 360-degree view of the monument. It took only a few minutes to
make the call, and the kids loved it. (Phthisic, C) Third grade teachers could introduce skype
into the teachings as well to show parts of the world that is meaningful would be something their
children would have a great experience with.
The last communication that the teachers should use in 3rd grade class if exchanging emails.
The teacher and parents could keep in contact about how their children are doing in school and
areas that need they might need additional help in so the children dont fall behind. Another great
thing about email is its fast and reliable, you dont have the possibility that the letter will be lost
in the mail. Research shows the primary focus of parent-teacher e-mail was students' grades and
the second reason is parents and teachers used e-mail for scheduling purposes; it was especially
effective to set up dates and times for meetings. Though less frequent than e-mails about grades
and scheduling, parents and teachers also e-mailed about three other issues: health problems,
student behavior, and student socialization. (Thompson, B. 2008)
Because technology is on the rise and many students use technology at school and at home it
is a good thing for teachers to make sure the students are practicing safe communications and

internet security. Teachers should set aside a lesson on safe internet practices and make sure they
understand what practicing internet security is and the consequences if they are not. During a
research study they found positive changes in the use of internet have been observed. Students
who took training about secure internet use became knowledgeable about secure internet use.
(Korkmaz, M., & Esen, B. K, 2013).
In conclusion the world we live in is based more on technology and because of that we have
great ways to have students get involved. There might be places the children will never be able to
afford to go and they can see those places by live feeds and live chats. It is very important to
practice safe internet security. As children grow older what they learn in 3rd grade will carry on to
their future endeavors, so you want to make sure you teach them everything they need to know.
