Who is John Wesley?
Methodists are spiritual heirs of John Wesley
hence the name Wesley Foundation. Wesley
led a revival that converted thousands upon
thousands in England and later the United States
to a deep faith in Jesus Christ. His followers then
and now have combined lively, personal faith
with social holiness, that is, making the world a
better place for all Gods children.
John Wesley, born 1703, was a Church of England minister who set out to reform the church
by leading others into discipleship beginning
with college students (at Oxford). He was so good
at methodically organizing the spiritual practices of the students who followed him that they
became known as Methodists.
Because of our beginnings, Methodists have
always had a commitment to campus ministry.
John Wesleys brother, Charles, who also led the
early Methodist movement and wrote thousands
of hymns, said, Let us unite the two so long
divided, knowledge and vital piety an aim of
many at Baylor.)
After the university, John Wesley failed miserably as a missionary to the American colony
of Georgia. Shortly after he returned to England
in despair, he had an experience of Gods grace
that empowered him to travel 120,000 miles
(on horseback) around England for 50+ years,
preaching to people the church of that time had
forgotten miners, slum dwellers and prisoners,
among others and organizing thousands into
groups of faithful disciples.
Methodists hold beliefs in common with other
Christians but focus on Gods grace and have a
distinctive emphasis on living out discipleship in
the world around.
