Type-Study Method: It Is An Inductive Procedure Except That Only One Case Is Studied

The type-study method involves inductively studying a single representative case to generalize about a group. A single river or flower can be studied to understand river systems or flowers in general if the subject is typical and contains all relevant parts. The method involves selecting a representative topic, providing background context, studying details, comparing to draw generalizations.

TYPE-STUDY METHOD

It is an inductive procedure
except that only one case is
studied.

Examples:

If students were to study the parts

of river system, it is not necessary
to study many river systems. Just
one river would be sufficient, but it
must be a representative of other
rivers and must have all the other
parts of the river system.

Passing River

Another Example

In studying a flower, one needs to study

only one flower which has all the
characteristics of most flowers.

Steps of Type-study Method

Selection of the topic

Apperception and motivation

Statement of a typical case

Study of details

Comparing details

Generalization

Selection of the topic

This step is crucial in the type study

method. The case or topic must be
represented of the group. It is
typical or average rather than the
exception that is needed.

Apperception and motivation

This background of the subject

matter being taught at hand.
