Method B18 - The Determination of The Average Least Dimension of Aggregates.

This document describes a computational method for determining the average least dimension (ALD) of surfacing aggregates. It involves: 1) Performing sieve analyses and determining the flakiness index to obtain gradation and other parameters; 2) Using the parameters like median, K-value and S-value to calculate the ALD through a set of computational formulas; 3) Rounding off the computed ALD value to the nearest 0.01mm for reporting purposes. The method provides a quick assessment of ALD but the direct measurement method is still considered the reference standard.

METHOD B18(b)T

Ver. 2001/03

COMPUTATIONAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE AVERAGE LEAST DIMENSION OF

SURFACING AGGREGATES.

SCOPE
The average least dimension (ALD) of surfacing aggregates is determined from the gradation and the
flakiness index.

APPARATUS
None

METHOD
Carry out the sieve analyses according to method B4. Use method B3 to determine the flakiness index.

CALCULATION

4.1

From the gradation information calculate the median value to an accuracy of 0,001 mm as follows:

A = Log10 (S L )

NOTES

6.1

The computational method is intended for use as a quick assessment of the ALD.

6.2

The direct measurement method B18(a) is still the reference method.

6.3

For reporting purposes round the ALDc off to the nearest 0,01 mm.
