Recipe of Me

This assignment allows students to examine their own culture, and to share information
about their backgrounds and unique qualities with the rest of the class (classroom
sharing should be an optional activity, respecting those who are not comfortable with
this type of self-disclosure). It is best to do this activity after some less-personal trustbuilding activities have been done, and after rules related to respect have been
established and understood by all. When this activity is done thoughtfully, it can yield a
great deal of information about the student that can be used to inform classroom
instruction.
Steps:
1. Provide two index cards per student and have a variety of colors of construction
paper available for students to choose from.
2. Hand out the Recipe of Me assignment sheet on the following page that
contains the specific directions for the activity.
3. Clarify all directions and give examples.
4. As a whole class, brainstorm a list of adjectives and write them on the board for
all to see and refer to during the project. This provides a ready-list of appropriate
words for students to use, if desired.
5. Encourage students to share the assignment with family members.
6. Allow students to share their recipes with the class, if they feel comfortable doing
so. This should not be a requirement of the assignment.
7. Place recipes into individual plastic sheet protectors and place into a three-ring
binder for classroom display. Student permission for public display is needed.
This should not be a requirement of the assignment.

This activity is recommended for middle and high school students

This activity was taken from the work of Brimijoin, K & Smith, N. (2005).
