Modal verbs are used with other verbs to express ideas like ability, permission, obligation, possibility, advice, offers and invitations. Some common modal verbs are can, may, must, should, would. Can expresses ability or permission. May also expresses permission or possibility. Must expresses obligation or prohibition. Should expresses advice. Would expresses offers or invitations, or is used in conditional sentences. Modal verbs are used in sentences to talk about abilities, permissions, obligations and suggestions regarding activities like riding a bicycle safely.

Modal Verbs are auxiliary verbs. They are used with other verbs to express ability,
permission, obligation, possibility, giving advice, offering, inviting

CAN

Can is used to express ability.


He can swim very well.

Can and May are used to ask for or give
permission. May is also used to express
possibility .

May I leave earlier today?


No, you may not leave earlier today.

MUST
Must is used to express obligation,
