Fofed Lessonplanrevision

This lesson plan template outlines a 2nd grade mathematics lesson on fractions taught by Maria Campbell. The lesson involves students using M&M candies to identify fractions of a whole and represent data using bar graphs and pie charts. Students will work in pairs to count fractions and individually complete a worksheet, bar graph, and pie chart representing the number of M&M's of each color. The lesson incorporates formative assessments, adaptations for students with special needs, and reviews fractions concepts through hands-on modeling and independent practice activities.

Big Idea Statement

Students will be asked to read the Big Idea Statement
that is listed on the board aloud and discuss its meaning
as a class.
Fractions are everywhere.
What are some ways that we use fractions
everyday?
Essential Questions Statement
Students will read the Essential Questions that are listed
on the board and review the meanings as a class.
How do we use fractions everyday? & What are some
of the ways we can show data?
Objective Statement
The students will be doing an activity with M&Ms and
fractions. They will be given a small bag of M&Ms and
will count the number of each color of M&Ms to
determine the fraction of each color is in the whole bag.
Then, the students will use the results to create a bar
graph and a color-coded pie graph.
Students are not to eat the M&Ms until the end of the
lesson!

With a partner, students will be able to identify and

count fractions of one with 100% accuracy (10/10).
Individually, students will be able to represent 10 items
with a pie graph in halves, quarters, and thirds and
answer 3 questions by analyzing the data, with 100%
accuracy.
Individually, students will be able to count and plot a
series of 10 items on a bar graph with 100% accuracy.

Transition
Students will choose one vocabulary word that they do
not understand, write it on a sticky note, and discuss
what they think the definition is with their neighbor.

PreAssessment of Students
The students will review already learned concepts by
answering questions about what was learned in math
class previously in the unit (What are the two pieces that
make up a fraction? What numbers do you put as the
numerator? The number of pieces; As the denominator?
- the total number)
Modeling of the Concept
The students will be lead in an activity in which the
teacher will model the Guided Practice.
Students will be asked questions about ten different
shaped magnets on the board- 5 circles, 3 triangles, 2
squares. These magnets will also be colored according to
shape.
How many circles? How many triangles? How
many squares?
How many shapes are there altogether?
Is there a word that could be used to describe
number of shapes? (Half, whole, quarter
Which shape appears the most? The least?
How would we make a pie graph for this data? Bar
graph?
How would we write a sentence describing how
many triangles we have?
Guiding the Practice
Students will now get with a partner and complete the
M&M Math activity.
During this activity, students will each be given a bag of
10 M&Ms. They must count the number of each color,
record it, and answer the questions on the worksheet
The worksheet will include:
Space for each M&M to be placed so that the student
can see how many there are of each color
Boxes for the student to write how many of each color
there are
Boxes for the student to write the total amount of
M&Ms
Space for the students to write a word that will
describe the number of colors in a bag (whole, half,
quarter; if applicable)
Space for the students to write sentences that state,
2/10 of my M&Ms in this bag are red, etc.

Providing the Independent Practice

Individually, students will then be asked to complete a
bar graph and a pie graph that represents their data.
Each student will be given a blank bar graph and will
label the X- axis (color) and Y-axis (numbers)
Then, using crayons, students will fill in the correct
number of boxes for each M&Ms color on the bar graph
Next, the students will create a pie chart, in which they
will split the circle into 10 pieces and will color in the
correct number of spaces
Finally, the students will answer the following questions:
Which color appears most often?
Which color appears the least?
How many total are there?
Transition
Students will each take out their sticky note and explain
the definition to the teacher to show that through this
activity, they have become less confused and have more
understanding of the vocabulary word
Adaptations/Accommodations for Students with Special
Needs
Students with ADHD or Visual Impairment will have
preferential seating
The student with ADHD will be given only one part of the
worksheet at a time to help him to focus
The Below Level Reader will have directions written in
simple English and will be repeated aloud. He/she will be
provided with frequent pauses to check for
understanding.
The Below Level Reader will be paired with an Advanced
Level Reader.
The student with Visual Impairment will be provided with
enlarged words on the M&M worksheet and bar graph
worksheet.

Formal Evaluation
the
Students will complete the partner activity (M&M Math
Learning/Master
Worksheet), in which they will count the number of each
y of the
M&M color in their bag (10 total) and will write
Concept
sentences stating what fraction of the bag is green, red,
blue, etc.
Students will complete the bar graph, in which they will
use the M&M Math Worksheet to label the bar graph and
color the correct of spaces for each color (10/10)
Students will also complete the pie chart, in which they
will split the chart into 10 pieces and color the slices the
corresponding colors (10/10).

Self-reflection

The students will answer 3 questions by looking that the

data on the bar graph and the pie chart (3/3).
Informal Evaluation
Students will be observed during the Guided Practice
and the Independent Practice to be sure that the
students are correctly following directions and can
answer questions about their bar graphs. The teacher
will use a checklist and will ask each student one
question about their bar graph during the Independent
Practice.
Each student will be observed while he/she states the
definition of the word that was written on his/her sticky
note during the transition. The teacher will use a
checklist during the second transition to be sure that
each student has shown progress as a result of this
lesson.
Summary & Review of the Learning
The students will reflect on the activities of the lesson
o What was easy about these activities?
o What was difficult until you got the hang of it?
o Did we meet the objectives?
Homework/Assignments
Students will be asked to complete another M&M Math
Worksheet at home, but with different materials (cereal,
colored goldfish, office supplies, etc.)
Magnets for Modeling of Concept (5 circles, 3 triangles, 2
squares)
A bag of 10 M&Ms for each student
M&Ms in bags for students to eat
M&M Math Worksheet
Bar Graph/ Pie Chart Worksheet (accommodations for
students with Special Needs)
Crayons
iPads with Pizza Fractions already downloaded (in case
students finish early)
