INTRODUCTION
Standard:
With the passage of stricter fuel consumption and exhaust gas emission standards, domestic and
import car manufacturers have been introducing a greater number of injection systems. Along with
computer controlled fuel systems, fuel injection gives the combination of greater fuel economy,
performance, driveability and reduced emissions desired by the consumer and the EPA. Engine
Control Systems Operation introduces the student to how various components in a typical modern
computer-controlled fuel injection system affect the operation of the entire system. Engine Control
Systems Operations assumes that the user or student already possesses basic knowledge about
automotive electrical concepts and measuring devices (DMM, Oscilloscope), and has previously
taken the Engine Control Fundamentals course (3610).
The Engine Control Systems Operation program consists of 15 activities. Over 60 animation
sequences are used in the Instruction section. Quizzes consisting of five randomly selected
questions are given after the student has learned a few concepts from the instructional animations.
A Final Exam consisting of 20 randomly selected questions is given at the end of the program to
serve as a tool to measure student understanding. Answers, time, etc. are recorded on the student's
diskette. Later, using the Instructor Management Program, the instructor can load this diskette and
display student progress on the instructor's PC. Periodic Diagnostic Activities give the student a
"hands on feel" for measuring the car's components and enforcing the electrical concepts covered in
the instructional animations.
In order for the student to use the program, an Engine Performance Troubleshooting Trainer
(3601) must be connected to a serial COM port on the computer and plugged into a 120VAC outlet.
The student must also have a student disk with his/her I.D. number and password on it. This disk
will have to be prepared by the instructor through the Instructor Management Program (IMP). The
instructor's program will initialize the student disk and record an I.D. number and a password. The
student must use these to operate the program on one of the training computers. This disk will then
receive the student's performance record from the training computer as the student proceeds through
the program. For the instructor to get the student record from the student disk into the instructor's
computer, the student disk must be placed in a floppy drive on the instructor's computer and the
Instructor Management Program (IMP) must be executed. Through menu selections the data from
the student disk can be transferred and displayed. The disk can then be returned to the student for
future use.
Prior to student use:
The instructor should connect the Engine Performance Troubleshooting Trainer (3601) and install
(optional) the Engine Control Systems Operation program on each computer that will be used for
training. The instructor should install the Instructor Management Program (IMP) on his/her
personal computer (see the IMP Operation Manual included). Once installed, the instructor should
make a class list and a student disk for each student. It is recommended that the instructor start up
the program on each computer and run through a portion of it to make sure there are no computer
conflicts.
Prior to student use:
Using the Instructor Management Program (IMP), student records can be stored and viewed in a
central location on a network accessible by student computers and instructor computer. This
eliminates the need for a student disk.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
The program requires, at a minimum, the following system configurations:
1. Pentium, 100 MHz or better, Personal Computer
2. 16 MB of memory (RAM)
3. Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT or XP Operating System
(Windows 3.1 and ME are not supported.)
4. 10 MB of free disk space on the hard disk (C-drive) to run from CD-ROM drive,
295MB (155MB without HELP) of free disk space on hard disk for installed version
5. Super VGA video card with 512K video memory, recommend 1 MB video memory
(must be capable of displaying 640 x 480 pixel screen resolution with 256 colors)
6. Floppy drive, 3.5" or 5.25"
7. 8X or better CD-ROM drive
8. Mouse
9. Available Serial Port (Com1, 2, 3, or 4)

INSTALLATION
The program will run from the CD-ROM and does not need to be installed to the hard disk
(C-drive) of the computer. It is recommended, if possible, to install the program to the computer's
hard disk. This will help speed up the operation of the program, because accessing the CD-ROM is
generally slower than accessing the hard disk and it will allow the animations to be loaded into
memory faster. The installation requires 295 MB of free hard disk space. Installation without the
Help files requires 155 MB of free hard disk space. The Setup program also gives the option to just
create an icon to run the program from the CD-ROM.
1. Place the program CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Program should autorun, if not
proceed to step 2.
2. Left 'click' on the "Start" button
3. Left 'click' on "Run..." from the Start Menu
4. Type D:\SETUP<enter> (assuming "D:" is the CD_ROM drive letter)
5. Follow the on screen instructions.

RUNNING THE PROGRAM

The program will run from the CD-ROM and does not need to be installed to the hard disk
(C-drive) of the computer, but it is recommended to install the program to the computer's hard disk.
To run from the CD-ROM, 10MB of free disk space is needed on the computer's hard disk. The
Setup program (see Installation) can be used to create an icon to run the program from the CDROM.
For Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT or XP:
1. Make sure the 3600 Cable is connected to the 3601 trainer and a serial COM port on
the computer, the trainer is plugged into an AC outlet and system power is ON
2. Place the program CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive
3. Insert the Student Disk into the floppy drive
4. If program did not autorun after step 2, left 'click' on the "Start" button
5. Left 'click' on "Run..." from the Start Menu
6. Type D:\AT3620\AT3620<enter> (assuming "D:" is the CD_ROM drive letter)
If the program is installed, you can start the program by doing the following:
1. Left click on start
2. Go to programs
3. Go to atech
4. Click on AT3620

TRAINER RESPONSE ADJUSTMENT

Technical Adjustment for poor response from trainer during diagnostic activities:
Because not all computers have the same processor speed or amount of memory (RAM),
we have included a way to adjust the trainer's response speed.
Two possibilities:
A. Symptom: PC continues to beep many times after changing the trainer's throttle.
Cause: Trainer response speed too fast.
Steps to make adjustment:
1. Quit the program.
2. Turn off the trainer.
3. Turn the trainer back on.
4. Start the program.
5. Go to the diagnostic activity with the poor response.
6. Go through commands until the program starts to respond to actions on the trainer.
7. Very slowly increase or decrease the throttle.
8. If the PC continues to beep many times after you have stopped increasing the throttle,
then the trainer's response speed must be decreased.
9. Press the "<" key once (don't use Shift).
10. Repeat steps 7 through 9 until the trainer stops beeping more than once after you stop
moving the throttle.
11. Quit the program.
B. Symptom: PC does not update a change in the throttle's position (beep) frequently enough.
Cause: Trainer response speed too slow.
8. If the PC does not seem to update the throttle's position (beep) frequently enough,
then the trainer's response speed must be increased.
9. Press the ">" key once (don't use Shift).
10. Repeat steps 7 through 9 until you are satisfied with the trainer's throttle position
update rate.
11. Quit the program.

27

The trainer's new response speed will be saved when you quit the program. If you notice that the
response from the trainer has become poor again, it could be because the trainer was turned off and
then back on while in the program. To check if this is the problem, quit the program, turn off the
trainer, turn the trainer back on, and then restart the program. If this does not correct the response,
it is possible the student accidentally hit the "<" or ">" keys while in the diagnostic activities. It is
advisable to have the students turn the trainer off and then back on every time before they enter the
program.
