THE SIX DETERMINANTS OF ARCHITECTURAL FORM
The first determinant is the
environment of the building, its relationship to other buildings and the site. Burj Al Khalifa in Dubai can be a good example, as it maintains a relationship with surroundings as well as define and render eloquent its role in the whole city scheme.
The second determinant of form is
the functional aspect. The pentagon, the headquarters of the United States department of defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia is an example.
The third determinant of form is the
particular region, climate, landscape and natural lighting conditions with which one is confronted. METI- a handmade school at Rudrapur, in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh designed by Anna Heringer is completely suitable for the particular region.
The fourth determinant of form is the
materials, which one uses. The Eiffel tower, located in Paris is a significant puddled iron lattice tower designed by Gustave Eiffel.
The fifth determinant of form is the
peculiar psychological demands of the space. Masjid Al Haram in Makkah is the main worship place of the Muslims, which fulfills the demand perfectly.
The sixth determinant of form is
concerned with the spirit of times. The Colosseum, as example is a reminder of Roman Empire.
