Transformations

This document defines and provides examples of different types of geometric transformations, including translation, reflection, and rotation. Translation moves an object without changing its size. Reflection flips a shape over a line. Rotation turns a figure around a center point. Examples are given of each type of transformation along with links to interactive activities that demonstrate these concepts visually.

TEKS

(7) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process

standards to select and use units to describe length and time. The student is expected
to:

(A) use measuring tools to measure the length of objects to reinforce the continuous
nature of linear measurement;

(B) illustrate that the length of an object is the number of same-size units of length
that, when laid end-to-end with no gaps or overlaps, reach from one end of the object
to the other;

(C) measure the same object/distance with units of two different lengths and describe
how and why the measurements differ;

Transformation
A transformation is a general term for four specific
ways to manipulate the shape of a point, a line, or
shape.

Translation

Translation is the moving of the object without changing the size. You
can translate it up down sideways.

Reflection
A reflection is a kind of transformation. It is basically a
'flip' of a shape over the line of reflection.
