Therearemanymaterialsyoucanusetomakeminiatures,themostfamousis
thenotoriouslyexpensive"GreenStuff".Ioptforthemuchlessexpensive
sculpeywhichhasmanymoreusesthanGreenStuff,butunfortunatelymakesa
slightlymorebrittleminisoyou'llneedtobecarefulwiththemwhenyou'reusing
them.Anyways...ontothelist!
AnIdea:Thiscanbeintheformofawrittendescriptionbyaplayer,your
imagination,adrawing,etc.
SuperSculpey:Iuseacombinationofregular(beige)supersculpeyandthe
firm(grey)variety.They'lleachcostyouabout20bucksatahobbyshopsoif
you'reonaverytightbudgetyoumayjustwanttouseoneofthem.Eachkind
hasitsprosandcons.Theregularkindisextremelysoftandstickywhen
comparedtoitsfirmcounterpartwhichcanbegreatwhenmakingpartsofamini
thatarethinoraddedonlatersuchascloth,pouches,etc.Ontheotherhand,it
alsohastheproblemthatitismuchmoredifficulttosmootheoutatsmall
scales.Thegreykindisgreatbecauseit'smuchmorerigidwhileyou're
sculptingandcanmakesharpandsmootheedgeswithease.Unfortunatelyit
doesn'tstickverywelltotherestofyourclay.SometimesIevenopttomixthe
twoclaystogetherforanintermediateconsistency,whichmaygiveyouthebest
ofbothworldsinsomecasesortheissuesofbothdependingonwhatyou're
making.Onasidenote,Youcanmakealotofminiswithasingleblockofsuper
sculpey.IhaveyettogothroughhalfablockandI'vemadenearlyadozen.
Wireforarmature:IusetwodifferentkindsofwireforministhatIsimply
happenedtohaveonhandwhenIstartedmakingthem.Thefirstisathick(1mm
diameter)steelwireandthesecondisextremelyeasytofind"twisttie"wire.
Everyhouseholdhastwisttieslyingaround,ifyouremovetheplastic(or
sometimespaper)layeraroundthem,youhaveahandyandbendywire!
Pliers:Evenifyou'reonlyusingtwisttiewire,twopairsofneedlenosepliers
makeitmucheasiertobendthewireasyouwantit.Fingersareoftentoobigfor
smallbendsforarmsandlegs.
Sculptingtools:Becauseyou'llbemakingsomethingextremelysmall,regular
sculptingtoolsaren'talwaysthemostfunctional.I'vebeentoldthatdentistry
toolsareprettyuseful,butIoptedtomakemyowntoolatafractionofthecost.
Allyouneediswoodbranch,aneedle,aflattenedoutpaperclipandsome
epoxyandtadaa!Youhaveanexcellenttool.
Anoven:Iuseatoasteroventoconserveenergy.Allitneedstodoisgoto130
Celcius(275F)andbeatleastafewinchestall.
Acrylicpaint:Thepaintneedstobeacrylicifyou'repaintingsupersculpey.Oil
basedpaintswillseepintotheclayandmakeitevenmorebrittleorevenmake
itdissolve.BecauseIliketohaveavarietyofcoloursImainlyusetheprimary
coloursandblackandwhiteandmixthemtowhatevercolourIneedatthetime.
Ialsohaveafewotherpaintsonhandsuchassilverbecauseitwouldbe
impossibletomixthat.
Smallpaintbrushes:Youcanbuyatinypaintbrushforacoupleofdollarsat
mostartstores.IboughtafewdifferentkindstofindoutwhichkindsIprefer,So
farthecheapestnylonbrushIcouldfindisthebestforme.
Aflat,welllitworkspace:Iusemydeskandafluorescentlight.Ifyouhavean
incandescentlightbulb,keepitfarawayfromtheclay.Becausethisprojectcan
takealotoftime,thelightbulb'sheatcanmakeyourcreationmeltandsagsoa
fluorescentbulb(orifyou'refancyanLEDbulb)thatgenerateslittleheatis
optimalforusewithpolymerclay.
MagnifyingGlasses:Ihavetriedacoupleofdifferentwaystomagnifytheminis
asImakethem.FirstItriedmakinganarticulatedstandforadollarstore
magnifyingglass,it'ssomewhatuseful,butIt'dneedmanymorearticulationsto
beperfect.NextItriedamagnifyingheadset.It'salsosomewhatuseful,butkind

4.Addclothing,armor,etc.Itendtodothisbyworkingthearmorandclothingin
myhandsandthenslowlyworkingtheedgesintotherestoftheclayusingthe
flatedgeofthetool.Thisworksbestwhencombiningtwopiecesthataremade
ofregularsculpeyoroneofeach.Firmsculpeyismuchmoredifficultandyou
canduseregularsculpeyasabindingagentbetweenthemandovertheedges
sinceyou'llbepaintingitafteranywaysyoudon'treallyhavetoworryaboutthe
differenceinmaterialorcolour,oncethey'rebakedandpainted,it'llshouldbe
prettyseamless.
5.Makeonelastcheckbeforebakingthatthewireisallatleastunderabitof
clay.Itcanoftenstillbeseenthroughregularsculpeybecauseofitsslight
transparencyandyoucanstillcoverthewirewithpaint,butit'sbesttokeepitas
centeredaspossibleintheclay.

Step5:BakeandWait!
Preheatyourovento130Cor275Fandputtheminiintheovenonaplatefor
15minutes.Makesureit'snotaplasticormetalplatebecauseit'lleithermelt,
catchfireortransmittoomuchheattotheclay.Oncethisisdone,settheplate
outtocool.Another15minutesshouldbeampletime.
SometimesmyclaygetsabitburntintheovenduetothefactthatIuseasmall
toasteroven.Abitofbrowningdoesn'tseemtobeanythingtoworryabout,but
keepaneyeoutifyou'reputtingabiggerminiinasmalleroven.

1.Basecoatscanbeuseful:Ifyourminiisgoingtobemostlylightercoloured,I
stronglysuggesttodoabasecoatofwhite,especiallyifyousculpteditmostly
outofgreysculpey.Thiswillallowyoutoputlesscoatsofpaintandmake
forgottenareaslookmoreacceptable.Ifyourminiismostlydarkercolours,you
canpaintitblackforthesameeffect.

2.Iusuallystartbypaintingthebaseblack.Thisisn'tnecessaryifyouwantto
makeamoreelaboratebase,butithelpsmefigureouttheedgesofthe
sculptureandthebasewhilepainting.Bytheendthereareallkindsofcolours
splashedonthebasewhicharetheneasytocoverupwithafinalcoatofblack.
3.ifyounoticeholesinyoursculptureduetobubblesburstingduringbakingor
something(thisrarelyhappens,butI'veseenitbefore),youcanfilltheholewith
thepaint.Sinceitdriesupleavingarubberfilm,it'lloftenevenoutimperfections
ifyouputglobsofpaintonthem.
4.Manydetailsyousculptedcanbemadeclearerandmoreobviousbyusing
paintproperly.IntheminiIwasmakinginthepictures,Ifeltthattheloincloth
wasn'tobviousenoughandcouldleadtoconfusion.Liningitwitharedborder
madeitmuchmoreobviousanddelimiteditnicely.Similarly,addingsilver
buttonstothemanypouchesontheminimakesthemstickout.

useless,andtheclaythatwasn'tcompletelydrywouldn'tcoalesceintoaball.I
didendupmakinganarmature,usingapaperclipandapieceofcopperwire.
Icouldn'tgetthecoppertowraparoundthepaperclipnicely,sowhen(andif)
Igetbetterclay,Iintendtoreplacethepaperclipwithanothercopperwireand
solderthemtogether.

reasonsforthearmature.Asidefromcompletecollapseunderitsown
