Technicians will fall under categories of light, sound, or stagehand. Lighting technicians must combine the visions of the director, set designer, and choreographer into an aesthetically pleasing lighting design. They then adjust and focus lights during rehearsals and performances. Audio technicians ensure sound is heard clearly by audiences by mic'ing actors and mixing monitors on or off stage. Stagehands perform carpentry, lighting, sound, and prop work which requires long hours to complete tedious tasks like hanging lights or setting up chairs for performances.

Lighting is one job where you have to combine the visions of multiple people. The
director may have this grand vision of how the stage should look, along with the set designer and
the choreographer too. Your job as a lighting designer, you must be able to put these visions
together in an aesthetically pleasing format. After the design is created on paper, you may have to
rehang or adjust the focus on a fixture so the lights can accommodate the design format. After
rehang then its rehearsals and finally show time. This article is relevant to my topic because it
overviews the information needed to be a lighting technician.

Audio technicians have the most hands on job. They must be able to portray the
directors wishes on possible sound designs used in a production. A technician must be able to
ensure what sound is being micd is being heard crisp and clearly by the audience. If the
audience can not hear or understand the words then there is no show. A technician must also be
able to mix monitors for whomever is on stage. The technology can be analog or digital, and
monitors may be on stage or in-ear; either way you will need to know it. This article is relevant
because it checklists the information needed to be a sound technician.

Bloom, Elizabeth. "Stagehands' union is an integral part of Pittsburgh's cultural scene."

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) 14 Dec. 2014: Points of View Reference Center. Web. 11

Stagehands are the most underrated technicians in the business. Stagehands main work
includes carpentry, lighting, props, and sound. One might be 125 feet in the air hanging a fixture,
or comfortably on the ground placing chairs for an orchestra. Most stagehands are unionized and
working out of a hiring hall, which establishes protection for the workers who are commissioned.
Long hours and tedious work makes stagecraft the most expensive and labor intensive part of a
production. The job will require your time and you will miss things such as family events,
holidays, working long nights on an even longer weekend. General construction and theater
knowledge is the basic needs, but most hands have a focus on one trade skill ie lighting/sound/set
construction. This article is relevant because it explains the general tasks of a stagehand.
