Xiongpayong Lpi Analysis2

Pa Yong Xiong took the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) for a second time and saw improvements in their ratings. Their strongest practice is now "Encourage the Heart" which is appropriate for their new role advising students. Their weakest practice is "Challenge the Process" which they attribute to preferring to be a team player over confrontation. Xiong wants to keep practicing behaviors to encourage others but also strengthen "Modeling the Way" by discussing their values and principles with others. They are grateful for the LPI giving specific leadership behaviors to develop further as an advisor.

Student Leadership Practices Inventory Analysis and Developmental Plan

Pa Yong Xiong
LPI Analysis:
Second Impressions
Before I took the LPI again this year, I was a little nervous to see whether or not my
ratings went up or down. I also want to disclose that I am no longer working in the same position
and also not working at the same organization.
Exploring Consistency
Overall, my ratings have increased from the last time that I took the inventory. I think that
it is really due to the position that I am. However, I cannot ignore the knowledge that I have
gained from taking the first inventory. From the second inventory, my highest rated is
Encourage the heart, followed by Enable Others to Act, Inspire a Shared Vision, Model
the Way, and lastly, Challenge the Process. The highest rated 5 behaviors of mine are: Treats
others with respect, Describes ideal capabilities, Encourages others, Looks ahead and
communicate future, and Foster cooperative relationships.. The lowest rated 5 behaviors are:
Asks What can we learn, Helps other try out new ideas, Talks about values and principles,
Seeks feedback about impact of actions, and Talks about how the future could be better.
From the top ten, my strongest leadership practice is now Encourage the Heart. As I
transition from being an Admission Advisor to a TRIO Advisor, I feel that it is appropriate for the
change. Although Enable Others to Act is still within my top two. Now that I am working with
students and building an ongoing relationship, it is easily to appreciate and recognize their
works.

From my bottom ten, Challenge the Process has now become my weakest leadership
practice. I believe this is because I am a team player and does not like confrontation. The lowest
behaviors that I am displaying are: (not) looking for ways that other can try out new ideas and
methods and when things do not go as he or she expected, asks, What can we learn from this
experience?
Last but not least my middle ten, Enable Others to Act and Inspired a Shared Vision tied.
I actually think this is very interesting as these two were not in my middle ground before. In a
way, I am actually excited because it means that I have done with I sought out to do last year and
that is to keep improving where I am already good at.
Focus Your Developmental Efforts
Behaviors to keep practicing: The behaviors that I would like to keep practicing is still to
encourage the Heart. I would like to continue practicing these three behaviors: Expresses
appreciation for peoples contribution, Celebrate accomplishments, and Creatively recognizes
peoples contribution. I think that especially in the area that I work it, it is most important. Also, I
want to also work on Modeling the Way. As a leader, it is important that others perceived me in
that way. I feel that the lowest practice in that area was that I dont really talk about my values
and principles that guides my work. I think that as I get more comfortable, I will be able to share
with others my values and principles.
Behaviors to strengthen: Now that Encouraging the Heart is my strongest, I want to work
on Model the Way. The three behaviors that I will work on are: Talks about my values and
principles that guides my work, Seeks to understand how my actions affect other peoples
performance, and Sets a personal example of what I expect from other people.

LPI Reflection and Conclusion

In conclusion, I am really grateful for this opportunity. What I appreciate the most about this
inventory is that it has specific actions that I can do to keep developing my leadership skills. For
this LPI, it was just solely from my coworkers and students that I work with. I decided to include
students because they are the ones at the front end that interacts with my daily. I am very excited
to continue practicing the behaviors and hopefully keep on improving to become a great leader in
education.
