BPT Lesson Idea

First grade students observed and recorded the weather each day for a week to see patterns. They then used the Graph Club app to create a graph showing the weather for each day. This allowed visual and linguistic learners to represent the weather data in their preferred format. The activity addressed science standards around observing and communicating weather data and was at a Level 4 for technology implementation as it engaged students in using technology for a student-directed, meaningful project.

BEYOND-THE-BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS

Name: Angelei Gabriel

Grade Level: First Grade
Content Area: Science
Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tool Used: Graph Club
Standards Addressed: S1E1. Students will observe, measure, and
communicate weather data to see patterns in weather and climate.

Description of how to implement in the class: During this lesson, the first
graders observed what the weather was like each day for a week. Every day at the
end of class, I had them document in their journals what the weather was like. They
could say it was rainy, cloudy, sunny, windy, cold, or hot. Students then used Graph
Club at the end of the week to make a graph of what the weather was like for each
day. Graph Club applies to the Multiple Learning Intelligences by allowing the
students to choose if they want each type of weather to be represented by a picture
(for the visual learners) or by words (for the linguistic learners)
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): LoTi Level 4 describes this learning
experience because they get to use technology to create a piece of work that is
student directed, they can use technology to communicate with mentors, and they
have the potential to create something that is meaningful and worthwhile. The
students are fully engaged in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic
problems using the available digital and/or environmental resources.
Description of the sample BBPT file provided *: Graph Club applies to
the Multiple Learning Intelligences by allowing the students to choose if they want
each type of weather to be represented by a picture (for the visual learners) or by
words (for the linguistic learners).
