Recordable Ultrasonic Testing in Lieu of Radiography

Recordable ultrasonic testing can be used in place of radiography for non-destructive testing. It increases productivity while also enhancing the detection of defects that may be missed with radiography due to its limitations. Various industry sectors are moving toward an approach of evaluating fitness for purpose, which has prompted considerable development of improved non-destructive testing techniques, particularly in ultrasonics. Recordable ultrasonic testing facilitates higher productivity and a better probability of detecting disoriented defects compared to radiography.

Recordable Ultrasonic Testing In Lieu Of Radiography

NANDHA KUMAR K S

This article describes the application, various code compliance and advantages of the recordable
ultrasonic testing in lieu of radiography. The implementation of recordable ultrasonic testing, not only
facilitates the increase in productivity and also enhance probability of detection of disoriented defects
which may not be detected in radiography because of its inherent disadvantages. To overcome the
limitation the inspection procedures were used principally in a test of good workmanship by requiring
components, and welded components in particular, to have less than a specified number of defects of a
given estimated size per unit volume (or weld length). While this is a reasonable way of ensuring the
quality of the manufacture, it can lead to unnecessary repair or replacement of components under stress
in service. The move, by various industry sectors, such as aerospace, thermal power plants, refineries
and the nuclear industry in particular, towards an approach to non-destructive evaluation based on
fitness for-purpose considerations, prompted considerable development of improved NDT techniques,
particularly in the field of ultrasonics.
