We will explore several Calvin and Hobbes and Snoopy


comics over the weeks, perhaps one each morning to get
them excited about cartooning.
Then, I will create a bitmap to greet children when they
return from recess, and have it on the smartboard. They will
get to read the cartoon, and then I will let them know that
they can create one too!
Using Bitmaps will give students a chance to use touch
screen or mouse technology, use the internet, and practice
their writing skills on a computer or ipad.

Helping students to reflect on their experiences
on the playground, then use creative imagery to
connect that experience to a writing experience
helps to deepen comprehension of language.
Students can share their story orally first, then
will write about the experience using bitstrips.
1. Teacher will begin introducing various
media to students, including comic strips.
Students will have access to multiple age
appropriate comic books in the reading
center, during DEAR time, etc.
2. Teacher will show a new comic and will
discuss the comic with students each day.
3. Teacher will create a bitstrips comic for the
classroom, and have it on the board at the
end of the week when students come in
from recess.
4. Students will read and discuss the comic.
5. Teacher will guide students to think about a
sequence of events which might occur on
the playground, focusing on the beginning,
middle, end, and the characters involved.
Class will create a class bitstrips on the
SMARTBOARD for demonstration purposes.
6. Students will be shown how to log in to a
student version of the bitstrips web site,
and guided through their creation of the
EMOJI.
7. Day two, students will have their save Emoji
or two and will then begin to add settings
behind their characters
8. Day three students will add voice and words
to their strip.
9. Students will be given time to fine tune
their bitstrips, and paired up to share their
bitstrips with a writing partner
10.
Bitstrips will be printed and hung up
in the classroom if the students desire, or
brought home to share with a family
member.
Students can create a 3 panel comic, or up to a 6 panel story
comic if theyd like to. They can elaborate as much as theyd
like to, and create a minimum of 2 characters, but more if

they are motivated and able to.

Students who need assistive technology would be able to use


teacher or para assistance to create characters.
Students will share their writing with a partner at the end of
the creation, and for a visual arts component, they will print
their comic strip and hang it up in the classroom.

Students who are given multiple ways to demonstrate
knowledge will be more motivated and engaged, and using
technology integration for writing in the form of comic strips
will encourage creative students to explore and engage
further. Additionally, with the use of the technology created
emoji, students dont need to be concerned with their
abilities to draw or paint.
