Procedure:

1. Remind students that bullying fosters a climate of fear

and disrespect that can seriously impair the physical and
psychological health of its victims and create conditions
that negatively affect learning. Bullying includes
unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or
perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or
has the potential to be repeated, over time. The
imbalance of power involves the use of physical strength,
or popularity to access embarrassing information to
control or harm others. Bullying can occur anywhere (inschool or outside of school) and at any time both during
and after school hours. Bullying can include physical
bullying, verbal bullying, social/relational bullying,
and electronic/written communication.
2. Discuss what a bully is
Do all bullies look alike?
Are they all boys? All girls?
What is the body language of a bully?
How do bullies walk and talk?

3. Discuss reasons why students bully others. After

students have shared some ideas, present that Students
bully:
To gain power
To gain popularity and attention
To act out problems from home
To copy what someone else does that they admire
Because they perceive it as fun
4. Now its time to discuss the victims or targets of bullying.
Do all targets look alike?
Are they all boys? All girls?
What is the body language of a targets?
How do they walk and talk?

Discuss that just like bullies, the victims can be targeted

for a number of reasons. Regardless of why, they still can
experience emotional consequences of being bullied.
They may experience: low self-esteem, a fearful attitude,
sadness, headaches, stomachaches, fatigue, panic, fear
of school, and they may become withdrawn.
5. What can people do to stop bullying and prevent any
more people from experiencing the negative

Professional School Counselor Guidance Lesson Plan Form

consequences of bullying?
Have students go to
http://www.pacerteensagainstbullying.org/#/respond and
explore what bullies and targets can do.
6. Introduce what a bystander is: A person who stands near
or looks on but does not take part; an onlooker or
spectator.
Ask students: Is a bystander who watches bullying take
place without doing anything about it being just as harmful
as the bully?
Emphasize that:
a. If a person acts as a bystander and takes no action,
that person is also harming the victim
b. Bullies like when bystanders do nothing. Bullies rely
on bystanders remaining silent so they can continue
bullying.
c. Bystanders play the most important role in ending
bullying. When bystanders stand up to the bullies,
bullies lose their power.
Have students return their attention to the website and
explore how bystanders can stand up to bullies.
7. 7. Have students complete the Putting It All Together handout
and then discuss (time permitting)

8. Reiterate that the most important thing

anybody involved in bullying can do is
REPORT it.

**There are a few options of HOW you report

bullyingthe MAIN thing is that YOU NEED
to report it!!! Bullies wont just go away.
Who can you report bullying to?
Teacher
Principal
Asst. Principal
Counselor
Nurse
Parent

Professional School Counselor Guidance Lesson Plan Form
