GETTING STARTED
Preparation of Materials
Begin the process of a standard oil change by
gathering the items of the "Materials Needed"
list from the previous section. For some, the
Owner's Manual for the 2000 Buick Century
may need to be consulted in order to verify
specific types and/or styles of itemitems
mentioned in the following instruction
manual..

Open the Engine Hood

Crucial in accessing the engine compartment, the hood of the vehicle
must be opened from on the driver's side. Found under the left-most
part of the dashboard underneath the steering column, a small lever
can be shown with the hood icon(see Figure 3). Proceed to pull the
lever. As a result, a popping sound can be heard and the hood will raise
slightly. Move to the front of the vehicle. Just above the front grill area,
the latch is located between the 1"-2" gap and can be found by
carefully inserting one or two fingers and sliding from left to right until
a latchit can be felt protruding around the middle area hoodaround the
center of the hood (see Figure 4). Once this has been located, push the
latch hood release lever and while simultaneously open opening the
hood to reveal the engine compartment.

Locate Oil Drain Plug

If the vehicle does not appear to fit a personhas not been raised to fit
underneath, use the a car jack (see Figure 5)to raise the front end of
the vehicle. Should this occur, placeand ontoaccompanying T-Stands
(see Figure 6)underneath reinforced chassis .to Bbrace equally, and
finally remove removing the jack from beneath the propped vehicle.
Use a creeper (see Figure 7) to easily slide under the vehicle to and
find the engine oil drain plug. Usually at the rear of a centrally placed
metal compartment, a hexagonal bolt can be seen (see Figure 8); this
is the engine oil drain plug.

Drain Engine Oil

Using either a crescent wrench(sometimes referred to as a "Monkey
Wrench"), loosen the engine oil drain plug. Once able to hand-loosen
this plug, take a moment to position the oil drain pan's center point
within close proximity (5-6 inches) from of the plug. Remove the plug.
Once the draining process slowsRemove the plug and monitor until to a
slight drip, wipe the engine oil drain plugplug clean with a shop towel
and replace plug until the hex-bolt, tightening farther than a 1/4 turn
past apast a normal, hand-tightened method.

Locate Oil Filter

To access the old oil filter being replaced, trace the metal engine oil
compartment to the front side of the vehicle.. About 1 foot above the
bottom of the compartment, the butt-end of the filter can be seen
positioned at an angle facing inward to the vehicle (see Figure 9).

Remove Oil Filter

Reposition the oil drain pan directly under the old oil filter being
removed. To take it out, spin the filter counter-clockwise, being careful
of the oil that will spill as a result of the position and 's angle. Once

removed, use a clean shop towel to wipe the connection threading

clean.

Replace Filter
Taking both the new motor oil and new oil filter, fill up the new oil filter
3/4 full with the new motor oil. Using a shop towel of or gloved finger,
apply a small liberal amount to the rubber O-Ring surrounded the
center cavity (see Figure 10). Apply less generously, or as you
seenecessary for lubricatedlubrication. To reattach the new oil filter to
the connection threading, spin filter counter-clockwise to the threading.
Using a loose, hand-tightening method. Continue another 2/3 turn
continue another 1/4 turn. Be cautious not to over-tighten, which may
result in damaged threading and/or other consequences..

Remove Oil Cap

Return to hood engine cover. If the hood was

returned to its original position for any reason,
proceed to return to hydraulic-assisted propped
position. Looking towards the central area of the
engine compartment, a small engine cap can be
seen with an accompanying engine oil logo (see
Figure 11). To remove this, rotate counterclockwise. One (normally, a 1/2 turn of the cap
will suffice).

Add New Motor Oil

FUse a funnel to fill the engine with the appropriate motor oil (see
Owner's ManualFigure 12) by adding to the engine oil orifice.. Your
motor oil choice should be determined, bearing in mind the make/age
of your Buick Century Make's Age (2000-Present) and its Mileage.
Consult an expert to determine the type of motor oil to be used, if
necessary. A 2000 Buick Century Custom allows 5 quarts3.1 Liters

(roughly 3.25 quarts) of oil. See Owner's Manual for more information
on the acceptable amount for specific vehicle
modelsyour vehicle..

Replace Engine Cap

To replace the engine cap, turn it clockwise
until it cannot turn any further (usually
normally, a 1/2 turn will suffice).

Post-Swap Diagnostics
Following any oil change, there is a diagnostic process to ensure that
an oil change went successfully. Some of the steps are as follows:

Dipstick
Locate the dipstick
nearest the engine oil
cap, and remove it from
its piped holstermetallic
tubing (see Figure 12).
With a clean shop towel,
wipe the entire
dipstickclean, being sure
to note the Empty and
Full markings afterwards.
Figure 5: Dipstick
Between these two
points are small notches denoting the acceptable range for oil
levels. If below the lowest notch, more oil is to be added. If a full
5 quarts was added, as stated previously, the reading at this
level would most likely suggest an unsuccessful oil change and a
leak may be present. If above the Full line, oil is may need to be
removed, as it might result in a harmful overflow during driving.
Once finished, rReturn the dipstick to its piped holstertubing.

Oil Level
Remove the dipstick once more and note both the oil's level and
transparency of the liquid. Check to ensure appropriate level, as
mentioned in the previous section. Transparency suggests that
all of the engine's oil was properly drained prior to the addition of
the newer engine motor oil. In the event that the dipstick
suggests leftover amounts of old oil, a new oil change may need
to take place and/or consult a trusted mechanic.

Clean up
The oil drain pan is toshould be drained into an appropriately,
sealed container and recycled by a professional. For any and all
spills on the ground, shop towels can be used in combination
with warm water and dish detergent. Lightly scrub and rinse,
allowing to air dry after..
