GETTING STARTED
Preparation of Materials
Begin the process of a standard oil change by
gathering the items of the "Materials Needed"
list from the previous section. For some, the
Owner's Manual for the 2000 Buick Century
may need to be consulted in order to verify
specific types and/or styles of itemitems
mentioned in the following instruction
manual..
If the vehicle does not appear to fit a personhas not been raised to fit
underneath, use the a car jack (see Figure 5)to raise the front end of
the vehicle. Should this occur, placeand ontoaccompanying T-Stands
(see Figure 6)underneath reinforced chassis .to Bbrace equally, and
finally remove removing the jack from beneath the propped vehicle.
Use a creeper (see Figure 7) to easily slide under the vehicle to and
find the engine oil drain plug. Usually at the rear of a centrally placed
metal compartment, a hexagonal bolt can be seen (see Figure 8); this
is the engine oil drain plug.
Replace Filter
Taking both the new motor oil and new oil filter, fill up the new oil filter
3/4 full with the new motor oil. Using a shop towel of or gloved finger,
apply a small liberal amount to the rubber O-Ring surrounded the
center cavity (see Figure 10). Apply less generously, or as you
seenecessary for lubricatedlubrication. To reattach the new oil filter to
the connection threading, spin filter counter-clockwise to the threading.
Using a loose, hand-tightening method. Continue another 2/3 turn
continue another 1/4 turn. Be cautious not to over-tighten, which may
result in damaged threading and/or other consequences..
(roughly 3.25 quarts) of oil. See Owner's Manual for more information
on the acceptable amount for specific vehicle
modelsyour vehicle..

Post-Swap Diagnostics
Following any oil change, there is a diagnostic process to ensure that
an oil change went successfully. Some of the steps are as follows:
Dipstick
Locate the dipstick
nearest the engine oil
cap, and remove it from
its piped holstermetallic
tubing (see Figure 12).
With a clean shop towel,
wipe the entire
dipstickclean, being sure
to note the Empty and
Full markings afterwards.
Figure 5: Dipstick
Between these two
points are small notches denoting the acceptable range for oil
levels. If below the lowest notch, more oil is to be added. If a full
5 quarts was added, as stated previously, the reading at this
level would most likely suggest an unsuccessful oil change and a
leak may be present. If above the Full line, oil is may need to be
removed, as it might result in a harmful overflow during driving.
Once finished, rReturn the dipstick to its piped holstertubing.
Oil Level
Remove the dipstick once more and note both the oil's level and
transparency of the liquid. Check to ensure appropriate level, as
mentioned in the previous section. Transparency suggests that
all of the engine's oil was properly drained prior to the addition of
the newer engine motor oil. In the event that the dipstick
suggests leftover amounts of old oil, a new oil change may need
to take place and/or consult a trusted mechanic.

Clean up
The oil drain pan is toshould be drained into an appropriately,
sealed container and recycled by a professional. For any and all
spills on the ground, shop towels can be used in combination
with warm water and dish detergent. Lightly scrub and rinse,
allowing to air dry after..
