Bridgewater College Teacher Education Program Lesson Plan Name - Katie Walker

The lesson plan is for a 2nd grade science class about the water cycle. The objectives are for students to explain and identify the parts of the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation), identify four types of precipitation, and create a water cycle craft. To begin, the teacher will sing a water cycle song. Then students will review the parts of the water cycle by explaining what happens in each part and identifying other types of precipitation besides rain. Next, the teacher will model making a water cycle craft while reviewing the steps. Students will then make their own craft by drawing arrows correctly and labeling parts, which will be assessed for a grade. Finally, the class will sing the song again.

Title of Lesson: The Water Cycle

Subject Area(s):
Science

Grade Level(s):
2nd

Name_ Katie Walker

VA SOL:

2.6 The student will investigate and understand basic types, changes, and patterns of weather. Key concepts include
a) identification of common storms and other weather phenomena;
b) the uses and importance of measuring, recording, and interpreting weather data; and
c) the uses and importance of tracking weather data over time.

Content Objective(s):
SWBAT to explain and identify the parts of the water cycle- evaporation, condensation, and
precipitation.
SWBAT identify the 4 types of precipitation
SWBAT create the water cycle
IEP Goal/Objective:

Differentiation
Assessment (based on objectives):
Students will create a water cycle craft where they must determine and label
the parts of the water cycle and the types of precipitation.
Materials:
Sun cut-out
Light blue, dark blue, and green paper
Condensation, Evaporation, and Precipitation cutouts
Cotton balls
Integration of technology:
NONE
Alternative Plan:

Access/Review Prior Knowledge:

Who can tell me the three parts of the water cycle? Good! Can you explain
what happens during those parts? Is rain the only type of precipitation? What
are some other types?

3-5 min

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built):

Now we are going to make our own water cycles. Hold up you pre-made water
cycle craft so that student know what they are doing. Using your craft, review
the steps of the water cycle and what happens during those steps. Then explain
to the students the steps of making the craft.
Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding:
During the lesson you will be guiding and asking question about the water
cycle so that the students are thinking and doing the most work.

Repeat and ask question about the direction for the craft to make sure students
were listening and understand what is expected.

Independent Practice:
Students will create their craft and they must draw the arrow of evaporation
the correct way and label the parts of the water cycle correctly. This is an
assessment and will be taken for a grade.

30 min

Closure:
Sing the water cycle song.

Declarative Statement Summary:

Wow! That was great boys and girls! I had a lot of fun in science today!
