Standard 3a Reflection

This document summarizes a lesson plan created for an English as a Second Language class to teach adolescent students using the novel "On My Honor". The lesson plan aims to meet several New York State ESL Standards and Common Core Standards. It incorporates themes from the novel like friendship and lying that are relevant to adolescents. The plan also includes presenting vocabulary visually and showing a video clip to aid different types of learners. Working with other teachers would help English Language Learner students better understand the novel's plot and message. The document reflects on how this lesson provides guidance for teaching life themes and incorporates visual elements to enhance understanding of key concepts.

Reflection: Standard 3.a. Planning for Standards-Based ESL and Content Instruction.
The artifact I chose for Standard 3a is from the Course ESC 761- Teaching English as a
Second Language to Adolescents and Adults. It is based on a lesson I created from a novel
called On My Honor, which is about a 5th grade level book that can be read by adolescent
English Language Learners (ELLs).
This novel is excellent for finding central themes that adolescents grapple with, such as:
lying, danger and friendship; to name a few.
This lesson also provides ways to meet specific standards-based ESL and content
objectives. For example, Standard 1 and 2 of NYS ESL Standards mentions students listening,
reading and writing in English for enjoyment and expression. It also meets the Common Core
Standard (Literacy.RL.5.2) which states that students will be able to determine a theme of story,
drama or poem from details in text, including how characters in a story respond to challenges.
It also meets the Standard in that the teacher would include multiple ways of presenting
material. Demonstrating pictures of unknown vocabulary such as: bluffs and rivers would supply
visuals to the students who are visual learners. Also, the teacher would show a youtube clip of a
river with a very strong tide. This clip would be of great importance because of the drowning
incident that happens in a river.
Lastly, it meets the Standard because the teacher could collaborate with the ELA and/or
Reading Specialist. The ESL teacher would serve as a support to these teachers in breaking
down the novel. As a result, the ELLs would acquire greater understanding of the books
message/plot.
This artifact helps me as an educator in a few ways. The novel I used provides excellent
intrigue and suspense, which would help the students greatly. And its themes (bravery,

friendship, lying, etc.) are apropos for everyday life. Additionally, there are several vocabulary
words that would be great for daily use. Lastly, there are visuals that I could incorporate to show
how a boy could drown and how dangerous an innocuous looking river could be. Overall, it
provides guidance and great themes for life in general.
