OVERVIEW
Students will participate in a blended learning experience, which incorporates mathematics standards
related to addition, subtraction, and time, as well as technology standards. Students will have the
opportunity to utilize an interactive and helpful learning resource online to emphasize the key points
covered in the mathematics portion of the lesson. This lesson builds on students prior knowledge of
addition and subtraction principles, as well as the basic concepts of time.

OBJECTIVES
STANDARDS
ACTIVITY
TEACHER GUIDE
Instruct students to carefully cut out the clock and the hands of the clock by
using the scissors provided and by following along the outer edges of the
lines. Then tell them to bring their clocks up to me when they are done cutting
them out, so I can help them attach all three pieces together using the small
split pins.
Once all of the students have created their clocks with working hour and
minute hands, review concepts of time with students by using the projector
and drawing out a few models of problems they will be working on with their
table groups. At the same time, model for the students how to use their
hands-on standard clock to help them solve the problems they are working on.
Instruct students to solve practice problems about time using the Elapsed
Time worksheets provided by Worksheet Fun. Tell them to try solving the
problems individually, and then discuss their answers with the other students
at their table group. (These worksheets provide a time line in a ruler format
from 12:00am to 12:00pm. Each worksheet consists of four time line rulers
like this, with an elapsed time in minutes for the students to solve.)
While students are solving problems on the worksheets with their table
groups, I will walk around and do an informal assessment of the progress
students are making in regards to understanding the concepts of time.
Once students have completed their worksheets, I will use the projector to
show the worksheet to the whole class. Students will be instructed to choral
read the answers with me as we go through the problems, while taking the
time to self-correct their worksheets by circling the answer if their answer was
incorrect and putting a star next to their answer if it was correct.
Keeping in mind the informal assessment I did earlier in the lesson, I will ask
a different table group to volunteer to come up to the front of the room as a
group and use the projector to teach the class about how to solve one of the
problems, while facilitating and providing feedback about this process. This
will provide them with support from the members of their group and will also
allow them to show what they know by teaching the rest of us!
(2)Technology Integration: More Elapsed Time Practice Problems and an
Interactive Clock
Instruct students to apply their knowledge from the previous activity to solve
problems on an Elapsed Time worksheet provided by EdHelper, an online
resource for teachers.
Ask students to hide their time line ruler worksheet and standard clock in
rainbow colors inside their desks, while they first read through the problems
and try to imagine how they would go about solving these problems.
After they have had a chance to read through the problems, instruct students
to take both the time line ruler and the standard clock in rainbow colors, so
they can use them to visualize how to solve the problems on their worksheets.
Tell them to work as a group and talk to each other about how they think the
problems should be solved by representing it visually on their time line ruler
and/or standard clock in rainbow colors.
Instruct students to raise their hands when their group thinks they have
successfully solved at least 5 or more problems on their worksheet. Call on
one group at a time to come up to the computer and utilize the interactive
standard clock on the computer to check their answers. Each member of the
group will have the opportunity to use the clock and check the groups
answers to a problem, since there are six table groups and 30 students total
in the class. Once the group has checked their answers, dismiss them to work
on 5 more questions and then call on another group to come up to the
computer station and check their answers. I plan to facilitate the activity at
the computers, to ensure students gain a better understanding of why their

answers are right or wrong, so I can understand what areas they are
struggling with and what areas they have each mastered.
Utilize the Interactive Teaching Clock at
http://www.visnos.com/demos/clock.
This clock provides a way for students to set the original time given in the
problem and then use the clock to progress to the next time provided in
the problem. It will allow students to visualize the changes in time in
hours and minutes as described in the problem, while also providing a
way to interact with the clock on the computer, similar to how they were
able to interact with the hands-on standard clock in rainbow colors that
they created earlier in the lesson.
(3)Technology Integration: Additional Practice for Students who Need
Further Instruction
Provide students who need further instruction with these concepts with some
additional practice by utilizing the classroom computer and participating in
interactive learning activities on AdaptedMind related to Time, under 3rd
Grade Mathematics Concepts.
It would be best for students to do this during a time when the class is
working on individual activities, free time activities, or a content area in which
the particular student has shown mastery of the content previously.
It is also possible to suggest that the student practice these concepts at
home, using the same program, if they have access to a computer with
internet. I would be sure to discuss this with the students
parent(s)/guardian(s) and discuss alternative options, such as tutoring or
time after school in which the student could utilize the classroom computer, if
they would not have access to the resources they need to practice these
concepts further at home.
