Triggy Formulas

The document outlines important trigonometric identities that students are expected to know for their exams, including: 1) Quotient and reciprocal identities that relate trig functions like tan, cot, sec, and csc; 2) Pythagorean identities that relate trig functions to sin2 and cos2; 3) Double-angle identities that relate trig functions of double angles to single angles; 4) Sum and difference formulas that relate trig functions of sums and differences of angles.

Important Trigonometric Identities

You are expected to know the following trigonometric formulas. Do not expect them to be
given to you on an exam. These identities will be reviewed as they are needed throughout
the term.

Quotient & Reciprocal Identities

tan =

sin
cos

cot =

cos
sin

sec =

1
cos

csc =

1
sin

Pythagorean Identities
sin2 + cos2 = 1
tan2 + 1 = sec2 (This is simply sin2 + cos2 = 1 divided through by cos2 )
1 + cot2 = csc2 (This is simply sin2 + cos2 = 1 divided through by sin2 )

Double-Angle Identities
sin (2) = 2 sin cos
cos (2) = cos2 sin2 = 1 2 sin2 = 2 cos2 1
sin2 =

1
(1 cos 2) (This is simply cos (2) = 1 2 sin2 solved for sin2 )
2

cos2 =

1
(1 + cos 2) (This is simply cos (2) = 2 cos2 1 solved for cos2 )
2

Sum/Difference Fomulas
sin (A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B
sin (A B) = sin A cos B cos A sin B
This is simply the formula for sin [A + (B)]
cos (A + B) = cos A cos B sin A sin B
cos (A B) = cos A cos B + sin A sin B
This is simply the formula for cos [A + (B)]
The following formulas immediately follow from the sum/difference formulas:
sin A cos B =

1
[sin (A B) + sin (A + B)]
2

cos A cos B =

1
[cos (A B) + cos (A + B)]
2

sin A sin B =

1
[cos (A B) cos (A + B)]
2

NOTE: The double angle identities (above) also follow from the sum/difference formulas
with the fact that 2 = + .
