Hayley Whitaker proposes a multi-media lesson for 5th grade students on WWII. Students will be shown a video the teacher created on FDR to spark interest. Later, students will work in groups of 2 to create informative movies on an aspect of WWII using movie maker software. Over 3 weeks, students will find and compile media to include. Completed movies will be posted online for parents and possibly shown to WWII veterans. The activity aims to engage students in higher-order thinking through creating original work to share with others.

MULTI-MEDIA LESSON
Name: Hayley Whitaker
PART A: -At the beginning of the unit on WWII, I will spark the students interest in movie making by showing the students the video I created on Franklin D. Roosevelt (the president during WWII). Throughout the unit they will keep in mind that at the end of the unit they will be creating their own movies. -Following the unit on WWII, the students will then choose an area from the standard below to create their own movie using movie maker. -After they create their movies, we will post them online for the parents to view. I will also try to arrange for a WWII veteran(s) to come visit and talk to the students about his/her experience in the war and the students can play their movies for the veteran(s). Grade Level: 5th grade Content Area: Social studies Technology Used (check all that apply): Movie Audio Podcast Vodcast Other: (list) Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: SS5H6 - The student will explain the reasons for Americas involvement in World War II. a. Describe Germanys aggression in Europe and Japans aggression in Asia. b. Describe major events in the war in both Europe and the Pacific; include Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, D-Day, VE and VJ Days, and the Holocaust. c. Discuss President Trumans decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. d. Identify Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hirohito, Truman, Mussolini, and Hitler. e. Describe the effects of rationing and the changing role of women and African Americans; include Rosie the Riveter and the Tuskegee Airmen. f. Explain the U.S. role in the formation of the United Nations. Brief Description of Learning Experience: Students will be creating their own informational video about WWII in small groups of 2. This activity will take ~3 weeks to complete. We will work on this project in class twice a week and each week we will be focused on finding and compiling a new component to add to the students movies (pictures, videos and audio clips). Once all of the media is collected, we will need at least two or three work sessions to put the media together in Window Movie Maker with the help and guidance of the teacher. Once the videos are complete the teacher will post them online for the parents to view. The teacher will try to plan a day where the students can present their videos to one or more WWII veterans. Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: This activity would be the highest LoTi level (6) because the students are creating their own work, publishing it online, and presenting it to experts (WWII veterans) who will talk to them about their experiences during this time. This activitys engaged learning indicators are that it is standard-based, authentic/student-directed, the students are the producers, the students are collaborating, and it is performance based since they will be presenting their videos. Importance of technology: Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to this activity because it wouldnt possible to create without it. Using these tools allow students to create authentic videos that enhance their learning experience. It helps students develop pride in their work and gain a sense of accomplishment of an advanced task. Internet Safety and Student Privacy: One potential safety issue that could arise might be students coming across inappropriate content while searching for pictures, videos, and audio clips for their movies. This can be avoided by using netTrekker as a search engine instead of Google or Bing. NetTrekker is an educational and safe search engine. Also, before the students work is published online, the teacher needs to have permission from the students parents. Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity: n/a
