Understandings
Overarching Understanding
Students will understand that a function is a relation that assigns to
each element x in the set A exactly one element y in the set of B.
Students will understand the difference quotient and how to substitute
numbers in to evaluate it.
Students will understand that increasing and decreasing function are
determined by the rate of change of the function.
Students will understand that even functions are symmetrical about the
y-axis and odd functions are symmetrical about the origin.
Students will understand how to transform graphs by shifting,
reflecting, and stretching a parent graph.
Students will understand how to combine functions and the sum,
difference, product, and quotient rules that go with combining.
Students will understand what an inverse function is and that inverses
are symmetric with the line y=x.
Related Misconceptions
Not understanding that evaluating a function at a given variable or
constant means substituting the number/variable in for the x term in
the whole equation.
Not understanding all parts of the difference quotient and only
evaluating for f(x+h).
Not understanding that the slope determines increasing and decreasing
functions, not where it lies on the graph (negative x/y value).
Not understanding symmetries with even and odd functions and
thinking that odd functions are symmetric about the x-axis since even
is symmetric about the y-axis.
Not understanding stretching/shrinking horizontally and how that
changes our x values.
Not understanding that
Essential Questions
Overarching
-What do we already know
about domain and when do
we have to be careful with
finding out domain?
-How can we use what we
already know about
functions?
-What are different ways we
can represent our functions?
-How can these concepts be
applied to everyday life?
-How would we expand this
and relate it to another
subject?
Topical
-When do we use functions?
-How is a function and its
inverse related?
-How can functions be
written as?
-What are the different ways
we can get a domain from a
function?
-How do we find an inverse
from a graph?
Objectives
Skills
Knowledge
Students will know
Students will know what a function is and how to find the domain of a
function.
Students will know what the difference quotient is and how to evaluate
the difference quotient for any function.
Students will know how to find relative max or mins of a graph, where it
is increasing/decreasing and determine if a function is even, odd or
neither.
Students will know how to transform graphs based off of a parent
function using shifting, reflecting and stretching.
Students will know how to combine functions using combinations of
functions rules.
Students will know how to determine if a function has an inverse and
how to find the inverse if it has one.
The test is designed to help students show their understanding of the material in the topic. The students
will be able to demonstrate what they know and have learned and if they have met the goals set for
them in this unit.
End of unit test.
Ms. Aiello
The test will be given during the last day on the unit and will cover the main topics of the unit. Students
will be given the entire hour to use to take and finish their test. One student is allowed extra time (1.5 of
given) on the test and may use the extra time if needed.
Students will complete the test during the hour. For those students who did not finish during the hour
(and arent granted extra time through the school) will be given a zero for unanswered questions.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.A.1
Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range)
assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function
and x is an element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the output of f corresponding to the
