Content Standards
Common Core Standards Addressed:
CCSS High School: Functions
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.A.1
Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of
the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function and x is an element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the
output of f corresponding to the input x. The graph of f is the graph of the equation y = f(x).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.A.2
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in
terms of a context.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.B.4
For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of
the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship. Key features include:
intercepts; intervals where the function is increasing, decreasing, positive, or negative; relative maximums and minimums;
symmetries; end behavior; and periodicity.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.C.7
Graph functions expressed symbolically and show key features of the graph, by hand in simple cases and using technology
for more complicated cases.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.BF.B.4
Find inverse functions.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.BF.B.4.B
Verify by composition that one function is the inverse of another.
CCSS High School: Algebra
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.APR.B.3
Identify zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations are available, and use the zeros to construct a rough graph of the
function defined by the polynomial.
Standards of Mathematical Practice Addressed:
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP6 Attend to precision.

Understandings
Overarching Understanding
Students will understand that a function is a relation that assigns to
each element x in the set A exactly one element y in the set of B.
Students will understand the difference quotient and how to substitute
numbers in to evaluate it.
Students will understand that increasing and decreasing function are
determined by the rate of change of the function.
Students will understand that even functions are symmetrical about the
y-axis and odd functions are symmetrical about the origin.
Students will understand how to transform graphs by shifting,
reflecting, and stretching a parent graph.
Students will understand how to combine functions and the sum,
difference, product, and quotient rules that go with combining.
Students will understand what an inverse function is and that inverses
are symmetric with the line y=x.
Related Misconceptions
Not understanding that evaluating a function at a given variable or
constant means substituting the number/variable in for the x term in
the whole equation.
Not understanding all parts of the difference quotient and only
evaluating for f(x+h).
Not understanding that the slope determines increasing and decreasing
functions, not where it lies on the graph (negative x/y value).
Not understanding symmetries with even and odd functions and
thinking that odd functions are symmetric about the x-axis since even
is symmetric about the y-axis.
Not understanding stretching/shrinking horizontally and how that
changes our x values.
Not understanding that

is equivalent to f(g(x)) and which

one gets plugged in to the other one.

Not understanding that not every function has an inverse when you
solve for it algebraically.

-When do we use functions?
-How is a function and its
inverse related?

The test is designed to help students show their understanding of the material in the topic. The students
will be able to demonstrate what they know and have learned and if they have met the goals set for
them in this unit.
End of unit test.
