Living by Fiction: Story Watching
scarlet tanager
Have you heard of bird watching? You know how some people tramp through meadows
with binoculars around their necks, at the ready for a whir of color? I see it! they
exclaim, after finding a scarlet tanager. Writers live in a similar way: we watch the
world carefully to discover surprising story ideas. Remember that we learned earlier
that Robert McCloskey was driving through Boston when he came to a long line of
traffic. He looked ahead to see what was causing the problem and saw a line of ducks
quacking across the street. Voila! The story idea for Make Way for Ducklings was
hatched!
This week we begin our much awaited unit on writing fiction.
It is our goal to begin looking, once again, for small moments that
will become the starting point for realistic narratives. This week
want you to story watch and write down seeds ideas in your
writers journal. Collect as many ideas as possible, though 3
entries is a good start.
