A separator must be designed for an alkanolamine plant, which uses an aqueous solution
of diethanolamine to remove hydrogen sulfide from a gas stream. After contacting the
high-pressure gas stream to remove H2S, the rich amine is flashed to a pressure of 618
kPa at 53.4 C and passed to a flash drum to remove the vapor phase, which is mainly
methane.
Design data: Liquid residence time is at least 5 min, with at least 1 min of surge
time
Assume that the separator is half full of liquid.
Gas flow rate = 12.8 kmol/h
Liquid flow rate = 242 m3/h
Liquid density = 1080 kg/m3
a) Size the separator (i.e. calculate length and diameter)
b) Determine the 2002 Cost FOB Edmonton (Cdn $).
c) The rich amine stream occasionally contains liquid hydrocarbons, due to
process upsets upstream. How would you arrange the internals of the vessel to
allow removal of hydrocarbon liquid with a density of 600-900 kg/m3 ?
2.
Size a distillation column for separating methanol and water (i.e. calculate the height and
diameter). A HYSYS simulation of the column is given on the course web site.
The separation requires 22 valve trays (for 13 theoretical stages), with a separation of 0.5
m between trays. Allow for 7 min of liquid surge capacity in the bottom of the column,
and allow 12% of the column area for downcomers.
3.
The wastewater from a polystyrene plant will be treated by the activated sludge process at
a flow rate of 390 m3/day. The treatment unit requires a separation step to remove the
bacteria from the water for recycling to the inlet, after the organic compounds in the
water have been degraded. The bacteria have a size circa 1 m. Select an appropriate
separation unit, and determine the bare module cost (Edmonton, 2002).
