Career Research Essay

Occupational therapy is a form of therapy for those recuperating from physical or mental
illnesses that encourages rehabilitation through the performance of activities required in daily
life. Occupational therapy has become a growing field that helps ill, injured, or disabled patients
improve, develop, and recover skills for independence. Some activities this career involves are
observing patients doing tasks, asking questions, reviewing patients medical history, and
developing a treatment plan for patients to do different types of activities to recover
independence. Occupational therapy services may include evaluations of the clients home and
other environments like school or workplace for adaptive equipment and training in its use to
help a patient become independent.
Skills and abilities a professional in this field would need are communication skills,
interpersonal skills, patience, determination, and a positive attitude. In this career one will need
skills and abilities like these because he/she will have to motivate clients who are discouraged or
frustrated in order for them to be capable of reaching full independence. This career requires
emotional strength because there could be times that patients can be frustrated because of their
disabilities and can take out their anger on their therapists; therapists should remain calm and
positive so that they can help their patients at all times.
Some colleges that offer training for occupational therapy are The University of St.
Augustine for Health Science in San Marcos and Touro College in Manhattan. At the University
of St. Augustine for Health Science, some courses that are available for this career are Applied
Human Anatomy, Applied Medical History Physiology, and Pediatric Intervention. At the Touro
College, the courses available for this career are Physical Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology,
and Nursing. One will need a masters degree in Occupational Therapy, and he/she must be

licensed or registered. A salary for this career in California would be about $85,749 and in
Manhattan, New York, it would be about $95,034. A person who is barely starting out in this
career would make around $51,310; someone with a few years of experience would have a
median salary of $76,940.
Some careers that are related to Occupational Therapist are Physical Therapist and
Speech Language Pathologists. Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist are similar
because both careers treat ill, injured, or disabled people. The difference between these two
careers are that in order to become a Physical Therapist, one would need to have a doctoral or
professional degree while a Occupational Therapist only needs a masters degree, and the salary
is higher for a Physical Therapist. Speech-Language Pathologist are similar to Occupational
Therapist because they both can work with children and both need a masters degree, but the
activities they do are different.
Based on my personality survey results, I would be successful in this career because I can
follow a well-laid out plan, which would be great for this career because it involves creating
routines for patients to follow so they can achieve full independence. Also, I can impress patients
with my thoughtfulness and integrity, and make them feel comfortable around me. Patients need
to be able to trust that I can help them regain their mobility.
