LEARNING AND

TECHNOLOGY POLICY
FRAMEWORK

Kelsey
Bartel

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Ultimately, the power of technology should be
harnessed to support innovation and discovery,
not simply to aid teaching. We need to engage
learners to use these new technologies as
designers and creators of knowledge.
- Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans

INSPIRING EDUCATION
Inspiring Education is a vision for
education that represents the voices
of individuals who want success for
students- creating personalized and
authentic learning experiences. This
vision requires an education system
that is diff erent from both yesterday
and today in how the use of
technology
will
bring
a
more
innovative
and
open
minded
perspective to education. With the
key tool in this transformation being
technology,
the
signifi cance
of
communication,
personalization,
opportunities,
engagement
and
authentic learning from this can be
associated with achieving this vision.

INSPIRING EDUCATION

Inspiring Education aims to create an education system

that
promotes
excellence,
allows
for
shared
responsibility and accountability, focuses on the
learner, engages in community involvement, and
provides opportunities for innovation. To trigger this
new vision, Alberta Education updated its Learning and
Technology Policy Framework to represent this new
attitude on education. This framework is used with the
government and local school authorities to develop the
policies needed towards the aim of Inspiring Education
through grades K-12.
Through using innovative
technology,
teaching,
learning,
leadership
and
administration within classrooms, schools, school
authorities, provincial government, education partners,
teacher
preparation
programs
and
professional
organizations can all achieve excellence and success.

WHAT IS THE LEARNING AND

TECHNOLOGY POLICY FRAMEWORK?
The framework is a roadmap intended to guide
government and school authorities in visioning,
planning and decision-making related to technology.
Through the eff ective use of technology through
grades K-12, this serves as a policy development to
helping
both
government
and
Alberta
school
authorities to achieve the vision of Inspiring
Education.

Building on the 2004 version, the current

BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A
TEACHER
As a teacher, it is our responsibility to keep up to
date and be fl exible with current trends and
resources- namely technology. A majority of us
aspiring teachers today did not grow up with the
latest technological trends nor were we taught in
school through these methods. Therefore, this
may be an obstacle to overcome for both the
teachers coming into the profession now, and
teachers that have been in their career for a
number of years. Staying up to date and open
minded with technology will allow us to build
authentic relationships with our students and
create experiences to broaden learning and
development. Through adopting, accepting and
integrating technology into our lives, the learning

BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A
TEACHER
As a teacher, it may be hard to stay on top of the
latest trends and keep students engaged in the
technology.
Constantly being creative, innovative
and exciting may become exhausting, thats why
sharing resources, and ideas of positively engaging
students through technology can be benefi cial to
everyone.
Another
challenge
a
teacher
may
face
with
integrating technology into the classroom is the
knowledge and confi dence that they have with the
devices. If a teacher isnt competent in their ability
to use the tool, it may hinder everyone involved,
therefore by putting in extra time, being willing to
learn and try new things may play a major role in the
success of implementing classroom technology.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS AN
EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
With schools having such a diverse range of teaching
styles, ages, backgrounds and personalities, it may
be diffi cult to maintain some form of constant
technology use or knowledge through the educational
system. As teachers implement technology in
diff erent ways, consistency will be hard to manage
causing confusion, and irregular technology use for
students.
With the array of teaching backgrounds
and personalities, it may also be diffi cult for all
teachers to engage in technology and not be hesitant
to use it.
Keeping staff interested, creative and
motivated may alleviate some of the uncertainty and
reluctance to implement technology. PD sessions and
seminars can be helpful to aid teachers in feeling
comfortable and effi cient with technology all while
maintaining their individual teaching style.

MISS. BARTEL
I feel that this policy promotes a lot of benefi cial
goals in combining technology and education. With
our increasing use of technology in todays society, it
only makes sense that as educators we include it and
promote a safe learning environment for it.
It will take time, eff ort, patience and lots of trial and
error before we each can each get into a comfortable
groove of implementing technology. Since technology
isnt going away anytime soon, taking the time to
invest in our own knowledge and understanding of
implementing
innovative
technology
will
only
enhance our future profession.

Innovation fuels todays global economy. Skills in the

21st
century
include
creativity,
self
direction,
collaboration,
multi-modal
communication
and
information, communications and technology (ICT)
literacy.
Integrating these skills into the learning
standards of school systems across the globe will
ensure students success!
